About
Höfðavík is one of two campsites in the Hallormsstaður forest in East Iceland, split into four areas by trees and set next to a cove. Toilets, showers, hot and cold water, electricity and a playground. The forest has around 30 km of marked trails and an arboretum of 90-plus tree species. Open 5 May to 10 October.
There are two campsites in the Hallormsstaður forest — Atlavík by the settlement and Höfðavík, the one here, divided into four areas by trees and sitting beside a cove. Höfðavík has three toilet houses with hot and cold water and showers, electric outlets for motorhomes and folding campers, waste disposal, an accessible toilet, an outdoor barbecue with tables, and a playground. Waste is sorted at both sites. The forest itself is the draw. Around 30 kilometres of marked walking paths run through varied terrain, and a family-friendly arboretum holds more than 90 kinds of tree and shrub. Hotel Hallormsstaður, a newer 100-room hotel with a restaurant, is also in the forest. The season runs 5 May to 10 October, and booking ahead is possible.
Wild camping rules have tightened. Use designated campsites to stay on the right side of the law.
