About
Sandfellsskógur is a woodland campsite in Skriðdalur valley, about 17 km south of Egilsstaðir on Route 95. The small Króklækur stream runs through it, picnic tables sit among the trees, and there are showers and hot water. Horse-riding tours and hiking start nearby. No electricity here.
The trees are what set this one apart — it's spread through a wooded area with plenty of room for tents and folding campers, and picnic tables tucked in among them. The little stream Króklækur cuts through the site, which tends to keep younger campers busy for hours. Washing facilities cover toilets, showers and outdoor sinks running hot and cold. There's no electric hook-up, so it suits tents and self-sufficient campers. The site is part of Stóra-Sandfell's tourism services, which also offer cottages and guest rooms if you'd rather sleep indoors. Horse-riding tours head out through the forest, walking trails fan out from the site, and East Iceland's main attractions are a short drive away.
Book ahead in summer, especially near popular spots. Campsites fill up by late afternoon.
