Atlavík is a campsite inside the Hallormsstaðaskógur forest near Egilsstaðir, East Iceland — flat clearings tucked among the trees. The forest carries about 40 km of marked walking paths and an arboretum of over 90 tree and shrub species. Open May to October, booking ahead.
Atlavík lies inside Hallormsstaðaskógur, Iceland's forest country, with pitches on flat patches ringed by trees. Two toilet houses serve the site, both with hot and cold running water, dishwashing, a disabled toilet, and motorhome waste disposal. There's an outdoor barbecue, tables and chairs, and a playground. The forest is the reason to stay. Around 40 km of marked paths thread through it, and a family-friendly arboretum, Trjásafn, gathers more than 90 kinds of tree and shrub. Rubbish is sorted here, with bins set beside the toilets. If you fancy a night indoors, the 100-room Hotel Hallormsstaður and its restaurant sit nearby. The campsite takes bookings and runs from early May to mid-October.
