Tjaldsvæðið Illugastöðum (selaskoðunarstaður á Vatnsnesi)
About
The Illugastaðir campsite sits by the seal-watching spots on the Vatnsnes peninsula in north Iceland, right beside the farm. It opens on 20 June, after the eider nesting season, and has open views in every direction. There are two heated toilets and sinks with hot and cold water.
Illugastaðir's pull is its neighbours: the campsite sits right by the Vatnsnes seal-watching spots, next to the farm of the same name, with clear views in every direction. Timing matters here. The area is closed to all traffic from 1 May to 20 June for eider nesting, so the site opens on 20 June. Come in high summer and the sun doesn't drop below the horizon, so evenings run long — there are tables set out to sit and take in the view. The setup is simple but well kept: two heated toilets, a pair of sinks running hot and cold, and a separate table for the dishes. There's electricity and space to spread out, and you can turn up on the day or book ahead.
Book ahead in summer, especially near popular spots. Campsites fill up by late afternoon.
