Möðrudalur á Fjöllum – Fjalladýrð

About

Möðrudalur á Fjöllum sits at 469 metres beside the only farm at this altitude in Iceland, in the eastern highlands. Cooking facilities, showers, waste disposal, electricity and Wi-Fi, with the farm's Fjallakaffi restaurant serving its own lamb, reindeer, goat and goose. Open 1 June to 15 September.

Möðrudalur á Fjöllum is a rarity — a campsite beside the highest-sited farm in Iceland, 469 metres up in the eastern highlands. It's a quiet, well-equipped spot with cooking facilities, showers, waste disposal, electricity and Wi-Fi. Easy walking trails lead straight from the site. On a calm evening you might pick out Herðubreið on the horizon, or Kverkfjöll over on the Vatnajökull glacier. The farm's own restaurant, Fjallakaffi, cooks with what the land provides — lamb, reindeer, goat and goose — and sells wool handicraft alongside a photo exhibition from the Holuhraun lava field. The little church, built by Jón A. Stefánsson in memory of his wife, draws visitors too. Day tours to Kverkfjöll and Herðubreið run for anyone heading deeper into the highlands.

Book ahead in summer, especially near popular spots. Campsites fill up by late afternoon.
