Campsites in East Iceland

Statuses are the road authority’s own, from the umferdin.is feed that also drives our road-conditions page. The feed reports stretches with a notable condition, so a road it does not mention is shown as reported open rather than assumed clear — and if the feed is unreachable this table does not appear at all.

Distances are straight-line kilometres from the Egilsstaðir campsite, computed from each site’s own coordinates. In the Eastfjords the road number is always much larger than the straight line — the coast folds into fjord after fjord, so a site 30 km away as the crow flies can be an hour’s drive round two of them.

Rates, seasons and facilities are the operator’s own, via tjalda.is. A dash under price means no current price card, not a free site. Where the published season cannot be read as dates the verdict column says “not stated”. Facilities shown are the 7 that decide a night in a campervan.

2 sites are in this list despite carrying a North Iceland region tag in our data: Stuðlagil Canyon Camping and Skjöldólfsstaðir. Both sit in Jökuldalur inside Múlaþing, are reached from Egilsstaðir, and would otherwise be missing from every East Iceland list including ours. We check membership against each record’s own coordinates rather than its label.

The sites people actually search for

East Iceland is unusual in that almost nobody searches for the region. They search for one campsite by name — Berunes far more than any other, then Mjóanes, Borgarfjörður eystri, Bragðavellir, Egilsstaðir, Álfaborg, Fellabær. That tells you something about how people travel here: the Eastfjords are not a destination you shop around inside, they are a coast you work your way along, and you remember the one place someone told you about.

Berunes, on the north shore of Berufjörður, is the one that gets named. It sits beside an old HI hostel, it has an indoor kitchen, and its published season runs late April to the end of October — months longer than most of the region. Mjóanes and Hallormsstaður are on Lagarfljót, the lake south of Egilsstaðir, inside the largest forest in Iceland, which is a genuinely different kind of camping night from a gravel pitch in a fjord. Borgarfjörður eystri is the detour north over Vatnsskarð — the puffin colony at Hafnarhólmi is a five-minute walk from the pitch.

The practical shape of an Eastfjords camping run: Höfn or Stafafell for the night you arrive from the south, Berunes or Djúpivogur next, then either Öxi straight to Egilsstaðir or the long way round the fjords through Breiðdalsvík, Stöðvarfjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður and Reyðarfjörður — four campsites, all CampEast, all the same price. Egilsstaðir is the resupply stop and the only site here that is reliably open in winter. Seyðisfjörður is for the ferry.
