Mosfellsbær

Mosfellsbær bills itself as a small town inside the city, and the campsite plays to that — set on the outskirts of the capital area, it's calm and low-key, yet only a short drive from the sights and culture of Reykjavík. There are good pitches for tents, folding campers, trailers and mobile homes, a sheltered dishwashing area, toilets and electricity. The town is more interesting than a stopover suggests. It was home to the Nobel laureate Halldór Laxness, whose former house in Mosfellsdalur is now a museum, and it has a lively crowd of artists and galleries. Outdoor life runs deep here. There are riding paths and horse rental, two golf courses, walking trails from shore to mountains, and waterfalls — Álafoss, Tröllafoss and Helgufoss. A footpath from the site leads to the town's swimming pool, which is a favourite with children.

Wild camping rules have tightened. Use designated campsites to stay on the right side of the law.
