About
The Beer Spa (Bjórböðin) is a ticketed beer-bath house at Árskógssandur in North Iceland, 31 km from Akureyri.
Bjórböðin — The Beer Spa — is a ticketed bath house at Árskógssandur on the west shore of Eyjafjörður, 31 km from Akureyri in a straight line. The tubs are filled with beer, water, hops and yeast rather than spring water, so this is a booked indoor soak and not a hot spring you walk up to.
Seven tubs, up to 14 people an hour. You lie in the tub for 25 minutes and then move to a relaxation room for another 25. There is a draught tap beside each tub.
The spa is a brewery's side quest: Bruggsmiðjan, maker of Kaldi and Iceland's first craft beer brewery (2006), sits in the same village of Árskógssandur, and the beer baths opened next door in 2017. That's why the tubs are filled with real brewing ingredients — young beer, hops and yeast — and why the craft beer at the in-tub taps is as local as it gets in Iceland.
The bath itself has no age limit — the bathwater contains no alcohol. The draught taps beside the tubs are for over-20s only, and under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.
