Sel Grensdalur Reykjadalur Sel hiking trail

Sel Grensdalur Reykjadalur Sel

This track starts at the school hut of the Junior College in Reykjavík; Menntaskólasetrið. It leads up the valley Grensdalur, where there are numerous hot springs, mud puds and colorful precipitation in the soil. The track is sometimes difficult to follow. In the end of the valley there is a way over a small ridge over to the neighbor valley, Reykjadalur. The two valleys both have beautiful geothermal pools and hot springs. However, whereas Grensdalur is untouched, Reykjadalur has broad marked paths and therefor very accessible. Reykjadalur has become very popular and there are always many people there hiking.

Sydsta Sula 17 08 2010

After trying this mountain about a week ago and turning back in 1020m altitude due to bad track (at a time I wasn´t even sure if I would be able to get down at all), I managed to get to the top this time by another route, very easy compared to the first one which I will not upload.

Hveragerdi Reykjadalur Olkelduhals Nesjavellir hiking trail

Hveragerdi Reykjadalur Olkelduhals Nesjavellir

I did this hike with a group of hikers called Vesen & Vergangur early october 2015. The trail will guide you through a extremely hot and colorful area. There is a possibility to take a bath in a warm lake after just about an hour of walking. There is also a lot of other trails in the surrounding area reasonable well labeled.

Esja Blikdalur 20 03 2011 hiking trail

Esja Blikdalur 20 03 2011

This was a practice hiking with a training group from Ut og Vestur. We´re preparing for Hvannadalshnjúkur on 8th of May. There are actually still some available spaces, I think, in the Hvannadalshnjúkur trip if anyone is interested to join (http://gowest.is) . New route I´ve not done before on Mt. Esja. Weather was nice in the beginning, calm and occasional clouds. But got windy and snowing a bit after appr. 2 hours. Good hiking with a great group of people.

Hatindur 09 01 2011 hiking trail

Hatindur 09 01 2011

Pretty easy route but since theres some icing in the cliff area and above, crampoons are necessary this time of year and an ice-axe preferred. Should be a very easy hiking during summer. Started of in about -7 °C so based on that appr. -15°C at top. Couldn´t sign the Guest book since the box was frozen locked.

Hengilsvaedi 03 04 2011 hiking trail

Hengilsvaedi 03 04 2011

Practice hiking before Mt. Hvannadalshnjúkur with the GoWest-group. 10 of us and the dog Birta, did this circle in the east part of the Mt. Hengill area. Weather was outstanding, temp. around 0-2°C, calm and sunny. Great time.

Kerholakambur 31 12 2010 hiking trail

Kerholakambur 31 12 2010

Last hiking/mountaineering of the year. Excellent weather, slight wind and temp around zero. Route pretty good although there was ice and snow on the last third. Easy to find good way upp the cliffs. From the top one can see amongst other mountains, Snæfellsjökull, Akrafjall, Hafnarfjall, Skarðsheið, Brekkurkambur, Hvalfell, Súlur, etc. only appr. 30 min drive from Reykjavik and worth doing if your staying in Reykjavik for short time. A slightly more difficult than the most popular route up Mt Esja called Þverfellshorn

6.3 km
Thingvellir Thingvellir National Park hiking trail

Thingvellir Thingvellir National Park

We hiked around the interior, and then to Lake Thingvallavatn (þingvallavatn). Thingvallavatn is the largest natural lake in Iceland and, amazingly, home to four different species of char. I recorded video periodically throughout the hike, sped up and smoothed the clips, and joined them together into a time lapse of sorts. Check out the link on the right.

13 km
Grimannsfell Helgufoss Little Loop hiking trail

Grimannsfell Helgufoss Little Loop

Borderline 'Gluggaveđur' today (-5C with cold northern wind). Boring first 30min on the road then steep incline up SW face onto slowly rising plateau towards Grímansfell summit. Great views all around as far as Þingvellir, Hengill and Bláfjoll. Steady drop down north face from summit and along river to Helgufoss. Great little waterfall with lovely walk alongside river all the way to Laxness' house. A refaire with southern ridge loop.

This area near the capital is seldom visited. Interesting views. Lots of remains of human activities through the ages. One for the bird lovers.

5.8 km
Helgafjordur hiking trail

Helgafjordur

To Helgafell and back to Hafnarfjörður. The blue circles: Uppland ring before the lava lakes. The Blue Circle is intended as a full-day hiking trail from the center of Hafnarfjörður, but it can of course be done in shorter stages. The map shows a loop of about 21 km, mostly along ancient paths between lava and cliffs, on the one hand along Selvegsgata in through Setbergshlig and Smyrlabúðarhraun, on the other hand along the edge of Kaldárhraun south of the headlands at Hvaleyrarvatn. The trail is mostly located away from roads, due to its proximity to small villages. As with all loop trails, it can be walked clockwise or counterclockwise. It’s the blue path so follow the path markers with blue on them. Near Helgafell there is a section without path markers but keep the river on your right and walk away from the bridge where you can also refill your water.

20 km
Thingvellir National Park hiking trail

Thingvellir National Park

Tourist trek through the Thingvellir National Park, visiting the fault that separates America from Europe, the place where the first Icelandic Parliament met and a waterfall.. It is a lovely place but too crowded in summer.

5.8 km
Hveragerdi Hot Springs hiking trail

Hveragerdi Hot Springs

Short and easy track from Hveragerdi Bus Stop (close to the Ring Road) to the natural hot springs. Easy trekking, low hills. You can take a bath at the same river, once you pass the hot steams. From the bus stop, it takes less than 2 hours to get to the hot springs.

Kaldbakur Westfjords Iceland 998 M hiking trail

Kaldbakur Westfjords Iceland 998 M

The Hiking Club Toppfarar hiking the highest mountain in Westfjords of Iceland, Kaldbakur - 998 m high - from Fossdalur in Arnarfjörður up to Kerlingarskarð and all the way to the top. Rather an easy hike with a marvellous view over the "West Alps" of Iceland.

Thrihnukar 8 Sepember 2009 hiking trail

Thrihnukar 8 Sepember 2009

Hiking to small hill Kristjándalshorn and then to Þríhnúkar. From the top of the peak furthest to East, we have a great lava cave called Þríhnúkahellir. This path is probably longer way to the cave. The cave is 120 deep and the deepest in the world belvie it or not.

5.9 km
Vifilsfell To Blafjoll hiking trail

Vifilsfell To Blafjoll

(n.b. elevation gain circa + 1000m) The stats might look easy, but a hard hike due to the terrain (and on the day, wind). A mix of loose gravel on steep slopes and moss + rock on the tops made for slow progress (as shown by the times). The first climb is the longest with a lovely summit at Vífilsfell. From there it's continous up and down perhaps 50-100m at a time along one ridge then traversing to the next. Great views on either side, but Vífilsfell remains the highlight. Good hike to keep in shape and a hard one to love :)

11 km
Esja E W Moskardshnukar Hatindur Habunga Thverfellshorn hiking trail

Esja E W Moskardshnukar Hatindur Habunga Thverfellshorn

Esja is hard work, however you approach it. Today's hike started ascending Móskarðshnúkar which is unpleasantly steep for 2km, then fun but still steep with great views at the top. From there I took the Westwards path along the ridges to Hátindur which is lovely but a North wind made it more work than expected. Headed North along the ridge then Eastwards over the summit (Hábunga) accross difficult terrain (moss + rocks) all the way to Þverfellshorn. Then the drop to Steinn and lovely finish by the sea below Esja. Slow going but nice, Esja has its own wind patterns, in particular the canyons between Móskarðshnúkar and Hátindur with strong North/South winds regardless of the forecast (valleys joining 2 fjords).

19 km
Hveragerdi Canyon Geothermal Area Hot River 2 Days hiking trail

Hveragerdi Canyon Geothermal Area Hot River 2 Days

We started hiking in Hveragerði and went up to Hot river where we went right to follow the red path and do the circle in a counterclockwise direction. Once we get to the crossroads of the blue and red paths we start following the blue path leading to an amazing canyon. The canyon is fun to walk thru and a few parts can be challenging. We set up a tent close to Djáknapollu pond. The next day we went to the Geothermal area where you can find mud pits and another hot river. After that, we made it to the "classic" hot river and finish the hike.

Reykjadalur 30 Aug 2009 12 14 hiking trail

Reykjadalur 30 Aug 2009 12 14

Hellisheiði, Reykjadalur. Easy walk down to valley "Reykjadalur". 100 meters downhill to the steaming walley with steamholes, hotsprings and hotriver. An exellent place for taking hot bath 38°-39° Celsius. Part of a hiking path to Hveragerði from Hellisheiði

Hellisheidarvirkjun Hengill Reykjadalur Loop hiking trail

Hellisheidarvirkjun Hengill Reykjadalur Loop

NB Distance and times are correct, m+ is 1300, pb with the elevation graph Great hike if you're ok with infrastructure in the view :) Climb up to Hengill straightforward and descent down the North face hard work as usual. Lovely path crossing the plateau towards Reykjadular via some streams. Loop around the North of Reykjadalur and descent into the valley which is very nice, following the river before the ascent back out. From there the Westwards route back across plateau was long due to North-Westerly wind. The last strtch through Hengill crater is great with a final steep drop to finish the loop. Nice hike.

29 km
Sydstasula Haasula Hvalvatn Day 1 Of 2 hiking trail

Sydstasula Haasula Hvalvatn Day 1 Of 2

Botnssnúlur is amazing. Real alpine vibes and depth to the valleys and landscapes. Day 1 is the bulk of the climbing. I approached Syðstasúla from the South: traversing steep scree heading Eastwards then turning straight up a narrow 'goulot' which leads to the ridge. From here it is exposed and rocky to the summit. The descent down the North ridge is spectacular. Miðstasúla will have to wait for another day. I cut accross the scree and traverse (through some steep sketchy patches of snow) towards the crête beneath Háasúla. From here the view opens up towards Hvalvatn. The short climb to Háasúla is pretty exposed for my tired brain and legs but what a view from the summit! (Towards Hvalfjordur and Langjökull). I take the descent super slow and continue down towards the lake, finally arriving over an hour beyond my conserative estimate. The terrain was heavy going (steep, rocky, loose scree) with a lot of traverses and a heavy overnight bag, or could it be age? Time will tell! I find a decent spot by the lake (n.b. no signal). The flies are mental when the wind drops but a great spot after an amazing day exploring.

Selvogsvegur Hlidarvatn hiking trail

Selvogsvegur Hlidarvatn

Start or end at the lake or a small parking lot near the trail start close to bláfjöll. Quite a easy walk in general but a short and fairly steep point at selvogsvegur. At hliðarvatn down to the parkinglot there is a really steep portion that should be traversed with caution.

14 km
Moskardshnjukar Medafellsvatn Day 1 Of 2 hiking trail

Moskardshnjukar Medafellsvatn Day 1 Of 2

Steep start, then onto the ridge. Great views but man that North wind was cold. Only 750m up and I can see my breath in June :| Long stint accross the plateau and then down the North side. Tried cutting the corner by following the river but probably no quicker. Ended with a long stint on the road and (finally) a tail wind for 30min! N.b. lovely camping spot for the night at Halli farm!

9.1 km
Trollafoss hiking trail

Trollafoss

This trail starts and ends close to the farm Stardalur. It leads to a beautiful waterfall in the river Leirvogsá. The trail is optimal for a short hike close to the city. Despite it's proximity to the city, not many people go there, so one can easily be there and enjoy solitude and nature. Spectacular basalt column formations can be seen in the rocky hills north of the trail. This trail is suitible for all seasons, for hiking, running or by cross country skiing in the winter.
