Islandia Studlagil Canyon Studlafoss

Islandia: Stuðlagil Canyon- Stuðlafoss Hiking trail in Valpjofsstaðir, Austurland (Lýðveldið Ísland). Si te ha gustado la ruta y mi descripción, no olvides de dejar un comentario y valoración con estrellitas, que siempre se agradece un feed-back☺️ Update July 2023: apparently after the construction of a new bridge, a second parking lot has been set up on the east bank at the Stuðlafoss waterfall, where the hike could start, thus shortening the hike by about 4 km. The Stuðlagil Canyon in the Jökuldalur Valley is one of the most impressive landscapes that can be found in Iceland. Its basaltic column formations until recently were still submerged under the waters of the Jökla glacier river, until in 2006 with the construction of the Kárahnjúkavirkjun hydroelectric power plant and the formation of the Hálslón reservoir, the Jökla waterflow level was lowered and hence this hidden gem appeared. To start the route to the canyon leave the Ring Road to drive on road 923 for 14km to the Klaustursel farm, the farm is indicated. Road 923 is an unpaved road, but you can go perfectly in a normal car, there are several farms along the road. Arriving at Klaustursel, park in the parking lot on the west side of the bridge. When we went, they were building a new bridge. Cross the old bridge and take the trail to the right of the bridge. Follow the path along the east bank upriver for about 5km to the canyon. When there is a junction, always take the right. On two occasions it was necessary to wade a small stream, which in summer was no problem. Half way you will find the Stuðlafoss waterfall, a waterfall of basalt columns of great beauty. Upon reaching the canyon you can descend to the river. Instead of descending where my track indicates and where I had to do some climbing, I would continue a little further on, where there is an easier path to get down. The canyon with its basalt column formations and turquoise waters is of exceptional beauty, one of the places that most struck me during our trip through Iceland. The trail to the canyon has no difficulty, once inside the canyon you have to be careful especially when the stones are wet and therefore slippery, and there are sections that require some climbing. Note: Another way to access the canyon is to continue by car on road 923 for about 5km to the next farm Grund that is located about 250m from the canyon on the west bank. From this side you can see the canyon from above and you can descend to the river, but then you cannot continue along the river bank inside the canyon as on the other side. And there are more people ... By the way, when they release water from the reservoir the water level rises and the colour turns to grey instead of turquoise.

Skagafjordur Thordarhofdi Island Thordarhofdi Or Cape Thord

Skagafjordur - Þórðarhöfði island ('Thordarhofdi' or 'Cape Thord') Hiking trail in Hofsós, Norðurland Vestra (Ísland). Located in the Skagafjordur (8km North from Hofsós village), and just like its twin sisters, Drangey and Málmey, Þórðarhöfði is an early Ice Age volcanic island with vertical high cliffs, rich flora and loads of sea birds. The difference is that Þórðarhöfði ("Thordarhofdi " or "Cape Thord", in a rough translation) is attached to land, by a thin gravel and boulder ridge of 2,5km long. You don't need a boat to reach it, just a good pair of hiking shoes (walking in the pebbles and rounded stones might be tedious). The imposing vertical 150-metre-high cliffs on the Eastern seaward side of Þórðarhöfði, with its impressive basaltic formations, are SPECTACULAR and definetely worth the visit. This is the main interest of the walk. Moreover, you will enjoy a splendid panorama of the fjord and the Tindastoll mountain range, on the other banks. Note that there is no really marked trail on the island, just follow the sheep footpaths nearby the cliffs in order to reach the eastern slopes and thereafter the summit (called Herkonuklettu, alt. 204m). It may seem obvious but do not get too close to the edges, especially when it's windy. Last but not least, there is definitely not 867m of elevation ! It's a mistake of Wikiloc, count around 250m.

Saudarkrokur Mount Tindastoll 995M

Sauðárkrókur - Mount Tindastóll (995m) Hiking trail in Sauðárkrókur, Norðurland Vestra (Ísland). The Tindastóll mountain range is a kinda iconic summit (alt. 990m) extending for 18km along the coast on the western side of the Skagafjordur Bay. Located in the North of the town Sauðárkrókur, its climbing is rather easy (though there is no real marked trail) and it offers stunning panoramic view all over the fjord, islands and mountains. Moreover, according to local legends, the mountain and its caves are believed to be inhabited by an array of sea monsters, trolls and giants. Beware of it ;) We suggest to start the ascent at the Tindastóll Ski Area (alt. 400m), which significantly reduces the way to the top if you begin from road 744. No signposted trail here but the way is... up. Easy parking at the ski base, just in front of the start.

Skagafjordur Bolugil Waterfalls And Canyon

Skagafjordur: Bolugil waterfalls and canyon Hiking trail in Varmahlíð, Norðurland Vestra (Ísland). The "Bólugil canyon" is located 18 km south east off Varmahlíð, in the Skagafjordur. The waterfall is visible from the circular road 1. It is a beautiful gorge where the river Bóluá falls from about 180m height and shapes 6 waterfalls in a row, 4 of them are really impressive. The walls are high and steep and the colors of the stones vary from brown and ocher to red. On the top, you will enjoy a huge panorama of the vast plain of the Héraðsvötn river and the surrounding mountains. The imposing 150-metre-high waterfall is SPECTACULAR and worth the visit from both sides of the river. This trail propose to admire the cascade in a circle around both edges of the canyon. Differences of flora are important from one side to the other. On the right bank, you get grassy grasslands but moss, lichen and fir on the other. There is no marked trail with signs, but the way up is easy to figure out. At one point, you will have to cross the river Bóluá at ford. At one km upstream from the falls, it is feasible without much problems. The river takes its name from the sagas. The legend tells that a woman witch Troll called Bóla lived in a cave of the canyon and stole and threatened the neighbouring farmers. Her story ended when a brave shepherd drowned her in a pool in the Bóluá river.

Holshyrna

Hólshyrna Hiking trail in Siglufjörður, Norðurland Eystra (Ísland). Hólshyrna is the characteristic moutain for Siglufjörður, right in the bottom of the fjord, between the two valleys Skútudalur to the east and Hólsdalur to the west. We start the hike at the parking lot just in front of the tunnel to Héðinsfjörður. We follow the road to the hot water drill holes and continue up along the Skútudalsá-river. There are several waterfalls in the river. We cross the river canyon on a snow bridge and turn west into a basin in the landscape called Saurbæjarskál. From the we ascend to the mountain ridge leading northwards to the highest point (687 m) from where we have an amazing view over Siglufjörður and to the surrounding mountains. The descend is a bit tricky. First we follow the mountain ridge to the north and then take almost a u-turn on a ramp avoiding the steep rocks. It is advisable to follow a gps track to begin with. Soon we reach the vegetation and walk in the slope of the mountain towards the northern foot of the mountain.

City Walk Akureyri

City walk Akureyri Hiking trail in Akureyri, Norðurland Eystra (Ísland). Akureyri is considered the northern capital of Iceland and is the third largest city in Iceland with more than eighteen thousand inhabitants. This walk actually consists of two parts. The first part goes through the main attractions of the city and ends at the botanical garden. I followed this section with the help of a travel guide and it is by far the most interesting part of this city walk. I added the second part myself because I thought there were still beautiful places to see on Google Maps. That turned out to be false and the last kilometers are mainly through residential zones and can be skipped. However, the last kilometer is worth it because it goes through the old town of Akureyri with some beautiful houses. The most beautiful part of the walk is the botanical garden where it was wonderful to relax on this late summer day.

Climb up into the bowl and search for the bones. They are covered in snow most of the year but visible around late August. The bones are remains from 26 horses that fell off a cliff in the fall of 1870. On a foggy fall afternoon, two farmers from Öxnadalur were fed up with a stallion from Skagafjördur invading his land, so they drove the group of horses far up into Grjótádalur and over the mountain pass, where no horse has gone before. They horses in the fog were scared and running fast. They fell off the cliff, for they didn’t see where they were going. Whether this was the intention of the men or not will never be known. Please be aware that some climbing over big rocks is required to reach the bones. The path returns the same way except for the last part, where you cross the old bridge and return on the other side. Be mindful of closing all gates behind you and only bring your dog if he is trained or on a leash as there will be sheep and horses in the area. Blaskogavegur Trail Husavik To Asbyrgi

Bláskógavegur trail: Húsavík to Ásbyrgi Hiking trail in Húsavík, Norðurland Eystra (Ísland). This is a route from the whale watching town of Húsavík to Ásbyrgi, where there are many hikes in the Jökulsárgljufur National park. The first section is along a quiet tarmac road leading to a geothermal power station, it passes a lake and in July I saw acres of lupins in flower. The route leaves the road for the Sæluhúsmúli hut, I found the door open to this very tidy hut where you can shelter and sleep, but keep it clean, removing boots at the door. Instead of using the hut I wild camped some distance later. After the hut you continue on vehicle tracks until the Bláskógavegur splits off as a path. For the next 20 kilometres the path continues in a WNW direction, crossing vehicle tracks and in one section following them. I found it mainly used by horses (it is an ancient packhorse route) and sheep. Vegetation is mainly dwarf birch, which grows to maybe 30 centimetres in hummocks, there are a few rock outcrops and an area of larger birch trees. The path ends at Undirveggur, after which the route follows a gravel road in an easterly direction passing various farms, and then a tarmac road and finally the main 85 road to Ásbyrgi, where there is a cafe and shop at the petrol station, a National Park visitor centre and a campsite. Note that there are no water sources on the route or places for food apart from at Húsavík and Ásbyrgi.

From Múlakolla there is a great view over Eyjafjörður, to the island Grímsey in the north and over the spectacular mountains as long to the west as to Fljót in Skagafjörður.

44/2022 Dimmuborgir: climbing Hverfjall volcano Hiking trail in Reykjahlíð, Norðurland Eystra (Ísland). 10kms We have started to record only after we reached the edge of the volcano. We started to follow the yellow path for a while to admire the lava 'sculptures' and then diverged to take the route to the Hverfjall and climbed it taking the challenging path on our right. The way was very steep and slippery due to the loose gravel covering the volcano. When we finally reached the top we were greeted with a stunning view into the crater and the black lanscape surrounding the volcano. We walked around the edges of the crater and descended the slope on the same side.

Husavikurfjall From Husavik

Husavikurfjall from Husavik Hiking trail in Húsavík, Norðurland Eystra (Ísland). Easy walk to the summit of Húsavíkurfjall starting from the town of Husavik, from the Whale Museum to be more precise. About half of the way, just after we get to the gravel road, there is a signpost indicating the two alternatives to go up to the top. You can see this signpost in one of the pictures. This track follows the easy and long one to go up and then it comes down on the more direct one. When you take a left to follow the easy one you go around the mountain and have the opportunity to see the lake that is on the other side of the mountain. The best of this hike is walking among lots of Holtasole, Iceland's national flower, and also the views you enjoy of Husavik and the snow-covered mountains on the other side of the bay. You may have to wade through the river at later points as well, as the river might go over the path. The path ends in the gorge with a view on the beautiful waterfall. It returns to the parking spot the same way, with an option to cross on the west side of the river. Kotagil is a very rocky path with risk of landslides and potential river crossings, please bring according gear.

Skagafjordur Grettislaug Glerhallavik Stroll

Skagafjordur: Grettislaug - Glerhallavík stroll Hiking trail in Hofsós, Norðurland Vestra (Ísland). Located on the western coast of Skagafjordur (18km North from Sauðárkrókur), this lovely and easy stroll take place between the grassy shores of Grettislaug (that got its name from the main character of one of Iceland’s most famous Sagas, Grettis Saga), much appreciated by the locals as a bathing spot with hot springs, and Glerhallavík, a small bay below high cliffs, which is also a protected nature area. In between, you'll walk along a little pond with many seabirds (Arctic terns, Eiders, Redshanks,...) and a further a nice fine black sandy beach where you can find green-flecked chalcedony pebbles that litter the soil. It boasts splendid views of the surrounding Tindastoll mountains, the Skaga fjord, including of Drangey Island, and the opposite Tröllaskagi peninsula with its snowy tops. Note that there is no really marked trail, just follow the sheep and horses footpaths nearby the sea and the cliffs. In such a beautiful scenery, a jump into the hot spring pools after the walk might be healthy and relaxing. Enjoy it! It is a private property, meaning you will have to pay a small charge to enter. There are changing facilities on site, and the water is approximately 40 degrees Celcius (102 degree Fahrenheit).

Kvikabekkjardalur Olafsfjardarskard Olafsfjardardalur Fljotum

Kvíkabekkjardalur - Ólafsfjarðarskarð - Ólafsfjarðardalur Fljótum Hiking trail in Ólafsfjörður, Norðurland Eystra (Ísland). The hike starts on the road above the summerhouses Þverá. This trail follows the gravel road leading to Skarðsdalsá. Then follow the Skarðsdalsá-river upwards until seeing the path and green marking bars. After that the path is well visible although many of the markings are broken. One of the brooks was just to wide and waterrich for me to to hop and had to be waded. The slope up to the mountain pass is covered with snow and relatively steep but it was not difficult to ascend in the snow. From the mountain pass there is a great good view over the mountains on the east side of Lágheiði and to Fljót. Again the slope on the west side of the pass was covered with snow and no problem passing it. Keep to the north of the river to avoid having to wade the river from Holtsdalur entering Brúnastaðaá-river. There are some markings on the way down and most of the time one can see the sheep path. The hike is not technically difficult but it is long considering the different landscape (tussocks, moore, snow, slides, brooks).

The trail from Örlygsstaðir leads from the parking lot to the memorial sign for the battle of Örlygsstaðir. The Battle of Örlygsstaðir was a historic battle fought by the Sturlungar against the Ásbirningar and the Haukdælir clans in northern Iceland. The battle was part of the civil war that was taking place in Iceland at the time between various powerful clans during the time known as the Age of the Sturlungs. The path continues along the fence, following the sheep gate up until the river, crossing the river and going further up the hill. Once it finds the second river, it follows along it‘s side up until the waterfall. The track ends at a viewpoint for the waterfall and returns the same way. Be aware of sheep or horses running freely in the area. Der Weg beginnt am Parkplatz neben der Route 1 und führt zuerst zum Memorial der Schlacht von Örlygsstaðir. Siglunes

Siglunes Hiking trail in Siglufjörður, Norðurland Eystra (Ísland). This hike starts at the bottom of Siglufjörður. We follow the eastern shoreline to the lighthouse in Selvík. The path to the lighthouse passes the ruins of the Evanger herring factory that was destroyed in an avalanche 1919. The path is partly trough moorland and was particularly wet now after the heavy rainfalls in the last weeks. North of the lighthouse the so called "skriður" (rock slides) begin. There are several ravines to cross with steep slides between. The path is partly marked with iron bars, but it is relatively far between the bars so a gps track is recommended. In some of the more difficult ravines, there are chains to hold onto. The stretch between the lighthouse and the tip of the Siglunes peninsula is only for experienced vertigo free hikers. We put up our tent at Reyðará-river/farm and continued the day after. The Nesdalur valley is deep but without any difficulties. In the bottom of the valley the path is (poorly) marked up to the Kálfsdalur mountain pass. From the pass the slope down Kálfsdalur valley is clearly visible down to the lighthouse again.

Askja Thorvaldstindur No Summit

Askja (Þorvaldstindur) no summit Hiking trail in Reykjahlíð, Norðurland Eystra (Ísland). We tried to get to the top of Þorvaldstindur (1516 m) mountain starting from Vikraborgir Car Park where people leave the car to get to Viti. Unfortunately we had to turn around about 400 meters before the summit because we found the ridge too steep and difficult. Starting from the car park and after a few flat kilometres we get to Viti where you can get down to the crater and have a swim in hot water. We make a left here and we start going up slowly until we reach the ridge. Up until here the path is well marked since we are following the track that goes to Dreki campsite. From here onwards there is no path marked. We try to stay on the ridge as much as possible to avoid ups and downs although it is not always possible. You have to be careful on this part since there could be landslides and also there is no one to help you. After quite a few hours of walking on the ridge we get to the final part of the ridge that consists of black rocks. We start going up this part but after a few meters things get tougher and we decide to turn around. Although we didn't get to the summit we enjoyed really great view most of the way. Maybe if more people follow this route and it becomes more popular they end up installing some fixed ropes or chains in order to make the last bit easier to reach the summit.

Circle Dettifoss Hafragilsfoss

Circle Dettifoss Hafragilsfoss Hiking trail in Víðirhóll, Norðurland Eystra (Ísland). Circle hike starting at Dettifoss, along the river to Hafragilsfoss and a bit further. Returning part not at the river but further inland (very "bleak" atmosphere). The part alongside the river is part of the hike Dettifoss-Vesturdalur. The circle took me about 3 hours. In general the hike is easy, only the descend and the ascend are quite steep (a rope supports climbing down). You should not take the route if you carry heavy backpacks, but alternative routes are available. At Dettifoss you are allowed to camp, but there are only very limited facilities available.

Holtsdalur

Holtsdalur Hiking trail in Siglufjörður, Norðurland Eystra (Ísland). A valley in Fljót that lies in direction to the mountain pass Ólafsfjarðarskarð (730 m). Now, in the end of June, the snow has just recently melted in the valley and it is relatively wet. I parked at the garbage containers south of the Brúnastaðir-river. Then I walked over the river to the north side and followed first a gravel road and then a sheep path and kept to the hill to be above the moor. I turned when I came to the river in the bottom of the valley and followed the river back. My battery ran out on the way back. I recommend following the river rather than keeping to the hill. The valley is very beautiful, with lots of vegetation that is characteristic for the Troll Peninsula, e.g. fern allies, ferns, orchids and all kinds of heather.

Hvanndalir Gjain Fossdalur Kleifar

HVANNDALIR-GJAIN-FOSSDALUR-KLEIFAR Hiking trail in Ólafsfjörður, Norðurland Eystra (Ísland). This is the last trail of a three days hike from Siglufjörður via Siglunes, Nesdalur, Pútuskörð, Víkurbyrða, Hvanndalir, Gjáin, Fossdalur to Kleifar in Ólafsfjörður. There are two ways to pass the mountains that surround Hvanndalir to reach Kleifar. This trail tracks the so called "short way" via the mountain pass Gjáin. The other way is called the "longer way" and although it is longer in distance the difference in time is supposedly not much. This "short trail" reported here is very steep on both sides of the mountain pass. It is considered easier when there is snow in the pass, but this time we used a line to ascend the last 60 m up to the pass. I do not recommend this trail unless with a local guide.

We walk up the ski slopes and head north of Siglufjarðarskarð-mountainpass. Above the end of the uppermost skilift we continue north to a terrace in the landscape called Grashólabrúnir. From the mountain ridge up above Grashólabrúnir we have a great view over the northern mouth of Skagafjörður. We continue north to Dalaskarð mountainpass, where people in older times passed to go to Siglufjörður e.g. to attend mass. From Dalaskarð there is a marked trail down along Snóksá-river ending at the horse staples in Siglufjörður.

Botnaleid Siglo Fljot

Botnaleið Sigló-Fljót Hiking trail in Siglufjörður, Norðurland Eystra (Ísland). Starting at the water reserve area in Hólsdalur Siglufjörður, we follow the river Blekkilsá up to a sort of basin in the mountain slope, called Botnar. Today there was snow there although we're well into August. We continue to the mountain pass called Botnaleiðarskarð. From there we have a great view over Siglufjörður to the north and to Fljót to the southwest. Today we had a look all the way to the west-fjords. There was also a lot of snow on the way down, so we were able to slide half of the way down. This route is an absolute gem. It is marked, but there is no painting on the bars any more and some of them are broken or with too long distance in between, so they cannot be seen. Thus it is a must to have a gps-track.

Iceland Trek - Day 01 - (2016-08-13) - From North To South Hiking trail in Reykjahlíð, Norðurland Eystra (Lýðveldið Ísland). It's part of a 20 days hike. Beware it's not the normal north south Iceland Hike. It's mostly offtrail, there are one extremly difficult river to cross and 20km on a glacier. There are a few dangers, I put tag on the track, but I'm not sure it's 100% acurate, because I made it from memory. I also put tag for water, but in case of water from snow it doesn't mean it will work for you too. In any case I'am not responsable if anything happen to anyone who follow this track. Maelifellshnjukur Spring Early Summer Winter Trail

Mælifellshnjúkur [spring/early summer/winter trail] Hiking trail in Varmahlíð, Norðurland Vestra (Ísland). Mælifellshnjúkur (1138 m) is one of the most imposing mountains of Skagafjörður, Northern Iceland, from where you can see far into the highlands of Iceland. If it is still too early to drive 756 road (due to thawing soil or winter conditions) and you want to climb this mountain (or you want a little more challenging trail than official one) but don't want to go 8 km to the starting point of the official trail, you can park your car at the crossroads of roads 751 and 756, walk the road 756 for about 4 km along the fence, turn at the end of it and follow it up the mountain through narrow ridge. From this point you have approx. 3 km hike one way on relatively easy terrain, the only difficulty is narrow ridge with loose stones at about 800 m a.s.l. The trip was 8 hours in total. Walking the 756 road took us 1 hour one way and we had few breaks for photos and snacks so the climb itself (from the end of the fence) should be approx. 5 hours at leisurely pace, both ways.

Hólar - Hofsá River - Þríhyrningur - (Hagafjall) - Hólar Hiking trail in Hólar, Norðurland Vestra (Lýðveldið Ísland). We decided to take a trip following an official trail to the top of Þríhyrningur (map of trails is located at Hólar University wall) with some modifications because we weren't able to locate any path pointed out on the map. Firstly, we went along the river to enjoy little gorges and cross the Hofsá in first available place. The best way to the top follows the edge in it's least steep section. There are three peaks to reach and first one is the lowest. The second one is rocky and quite dangerous due to movable litlle stones but when you're on the top you can see the surface is flat. If your plan is to get to the very top of the mountain massive called Hagafjall you should keep hiking in eastern direction. If not, there's third peak and getting there from the second one is very easy. the slope remaind gigantic stairs with vertical rocky walls, and its fragments are also very movable. Sometimes you might provoke an avalanche and have to be careful not to fall down with mass of rocks. We pointed out on the map a dangerous way down and don't recommend it unless you are well prepared. It would be better to go back to the first peak and return the same way. The trip took us about 10 hours 43 minutes with all the little beaks for photos, clothing, looking at map, etc. excluding bigger pauses for eating, about 12 hours in total.

Studlagil Canyon Islandia

Stuðlagil Canyon - Islandia Hiking trail in Fellabaer, Austurland (Ísland). Caminadeta amb uns paratges brutals! THE BASALT CANYON Studlagil Canyon is the nature dimond at “Efri-Jökuldalur” and has become a popular site to visit, particularly after the hydroelectric plant Kárahnjúkavirkjun was built 2007. The section of the river which is named Stuðlagil (Basalt Columns) is considered to have one of Iceland’s largest collections of basalt columns on land. Today, the river itself is hardly comparable to former times, when it was a gushing glacial river transporting tonnes of sediment. This is because the river was re-directed with Kárahnjúkar dam. The canyon is 500 m long and with 20-30 m basalt columns on both side of the river.

2024 09 16 Hverfjall Volcano Hike

2024-09-16 - Hverfjall volcano hike Hiking trail in Reykjahlíð, Norðurland Eystra (Ísland). Beautiful short trek, just like for three hours (return) ... will take you to the rim of Hverfjall volcano that erupted ~2,500 years ago... "Hverfjall is probably the biggest tephra crater in Europe, which makes it well worth a visit." (Wikipedia) It has stunning views! Along the hike, one may observe Dimmuborgir "a large area of unusually shaped lava fields composed of various volcanic caves and rock formations, reminiscent of an ancient collapsed citadel." (Wikipedia) Officially, summer in Iceland ends on Sep/15... I visited the volcano one day later in conditions that I would not be afraid to label as "winter" ones... :-) All frozen, with traces of snow and cold-cold strong wind. Well, to Icelandic standards, it was probably only a touch of autumn! :-D :-D :-D Different visualization of this trek of mine to be found at: https://en.mapy.cz/s/lovokobetu

Kotagil 15 10 2020

Kotagil 15-10-2020 Hiking trail in Varmahlíð, Norðurland Vestra (Ísland). Follow the trail on the right hand. Keep near to the river. Don’t climb, the rocks are porous and crumbles. In spring 2020 there was too much water in the river to access the waterfall in the bottom of the canyon as some of the trail is the stones in the water close to the “riverbank” or more accurate “the rocks”. It is great with walking sticks to keep the balance and not going into the water. Check it out in icelandic walking app WAPP as well ;)

Reykjahlid Grjotagja Iceland

Reykjahlíð - Grjótagjá (Iceland) Hiking trail in Reykjahlíð, Norðurland Eystra (Ísland). A very easy walk from the parking lot to a rather interesting place - the Stóragjá water cave (I swam in it) and Grjótagjá (we only peeked in - it was too scary to go further). The track is artificially drawn according to a hike that took place in June 2014 (photos are also from that time). The entire route was completed in 2 hours.

Vikurbyrda Hvanndalir

VIKURBYRDA-HVANNDALIR Hiking trail in Ólafsfjörður, Norðurland Eystra (Ísland). This trail is a part of a three days hike from Siglufjörður via Siglunes, Pútuskörð, Héðinsfjörður, Víkurbyrða, Hvanndalir, Gjáin to Kleifar. The original plan was to walk the shore from Músadalir in Héðinsfjörður to Hvanndalir but conditions were unfavorable so this was a plan B for reaching Hvanndalir from Héðinsfjörður. The slope up to Víkurbyrða is steep but once the pass is reached the way down is relatively simple.

Gardshyrna Og Audnahyrna

Garðshyrna og Auðnahyrna Hiking trail in Ólafsfjörður, Norðurland Eystra (Ísland). The hike starts at the farm Garður. It goes straight up slope heading for the mountain edge Garðshyrnan. The ground is partly relatively loose and steep. On Garðshyrnan we have a beautiful look over the lake Ólafsfjarðarvatn on the east side and down to the mouth of Skeggjabrekkudalur valley to the northwest. We continued along the edge to the next peak, Auðnahyrna. The mountain edge is narrow with steep slopes on both sides. On the way there is a stone cairn and we assumed that was the peak Auðnahyrna, however according to maps the real thing is a bit further in 805 m height but we only reached 640 m. Anyway, a great moderately easy or moderately difficult hike, depending on whether one is afraid of heights, with a great view in all directions.
