Frequently
asked
questions
How long is the Valadalur hike?
The Valadalur trail is about 5.0 km based on its recorded GPS track. Times vary with pace, weather and how much you stop — plan conservatively and turn back early if conditions change.
How do I get to the Valadalur trailhead?
Valadalur is in North Iceland. Use the map on this page for the trailhead coordinates and check live road conditions before you drive — some trailheads sit on gravel or F-roads that need a 4×4 and only open in summer.
Is Valadalur safe to hike alone?
Valadalur sits 7.9 km from Varmahlíð, and 4.7 km from Route 1. The uploader rated it easy and it climbs about 146 m. Iceland trails are often unmarked and weather turns quickly. Tell someone your plan (or file one at safetravel.is), carry a charged phone and layers, check the forecast, and turn back if fog, wind or rising rivers set in. Don’t rely on phone signal.
When is the best time to hike Valadalur?
Most Icelandic hiking is a June–September activity, when trails are snow-free and daylight is long. Highland routes open later and close earlier; check road and trail status before committing.
