Borgarnes Grimstadamuli

Borgarnes - Grímstaðamúli Hiking trail in Borgarnes, Vesturland (Ísland). Grimsstadir - Grímstaðamúli This walk in Grímstaðamúli mount is located 20 km north from Borgarnes. It boasts great views of the broad Borgarfjordur fjord and Hafnarfjall mountains. Rather easy stroll. It starts from the Grimsstadir farm. There is no marked trail with signs, but the way is up and easy to figure out until a pond, it makes a circle. The path does not lead to the summit of Grímstaðamúli but turns halfway to head its western slope called Mulaköst. The return goes through the descent of the small torrent Stekká (complicated in some places a bit steep, especially if it's wet, be careful).

Bruararfoss Mount Hvarf Alt 238M

Brúarárfoss - Mount Hvarf (alt. 238m.) Hiking trail in Reykholt, Suðurland (Ísland). The main goal of this hike is, of course, to admire the Brúarárfoss waterfalls with their magnificent turquoise colours water. For those of you whose desire ends there, once you've reached the waterfalls (distance: around 3,5km) you can always turn around and walk back the way you came. For our part, we continued our journey by climbing Mount Hvarf (alt. 238m.), which offers a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape from its summit. BEWARE: Much of the ascent and descent is OFF-TRAIL. As in many other parts of Iceland, there are no well-maintained, signposted paths to the top. Nature is both wild and abundant. In other words, it's an epic trip. Better to know now than to regret and criticise later.

Bruarfoss Midfoss And Hlauptungufoss From Reykholt

Brúarfoss - Miðfoss and Hlauptungufoss from Reykholt Hiking trail in Reykholt, Suðurland (Ísland). Trail from parking in Reykholt passing through: - Miðfoss (3.6 km) - Hlauptungufoss (4.1 km) To Brúarfoss. Hike along the river most of the way, partly in the woods. Can be slippery and muddy in rain, recommend good shoes. Halfway the river separates and you can enjoy a more quiet part of the trail.

Ok Volcano From Husafell Iceland 08 03 18

Ok volcano from Húsafell, Iceland (08-03-18) Hiking trail in Ás, Vesturland (Lýðveldið Ísland). The Ok is a typical shield volcano with a very wide base compared to its height. This basically means that you have to walk a lot to get to the top, although the slopes are normally very gentle. The steepest part of this route is actually the first slope you see from the bottom of the Húsafell valley, in which you hike up one third of the route´s elevation gain in just 2 km. In this first part you can take any of the two paths on both sides of the small canyon (in winter is better to take the left one). From the top of that first slope the slopes are much less steep, so you need to walk another 10 km to hike up the other two thirds of the route´s elevation gain. The second part of the route is just a straight line up with only one remarkable point: a series of lagoons located around one kilometer after the top of the first slope (see waypoint on the map). On the summit of this volcano you will see the remains of a double crater. Locals like to go up to this mountain by 4x4 or ATV. The only things to be concerned with on this route are, first, that this mountain has generally bad weather conditions (very strong wind and fog are very common here), and second, there can be a lot of ice during the autumn, winter and spring. The Ok was considered as the smallest glacier in Iceland until few years ago. Now scientists have taken its glacier title because the ice cap on the top doesn’t meet the conditions for being considered as a glacier anymore, i.e., to move downwards by its own weight and that there is ice cap from winter to winter.

Holsfjall Trollatindar 07 Nov 2009 09 47

Hólsfjall Tröllatindar: 07 NOV 2009 09:47 Hiking trail in Staðastaður, Vesturland (Ísland). Hiking in Snaefellsnes mountains with marvellus view over mountains to east and west plus glacier Snæfellsjökull (Snaefellsjokull). First 350 altitude upp steep hill but rather easy after that.

Grundarfjordur

Grundarfjordur Hiking trail in Grundarfjörður, Vesturland (Ísland). Hike from Grundarfjordur town to kirkujufellsfoss and then half-circle Kirkjufell mountain. Picked up by Zodiac from ship :)

Akrafjall 15 Sep 2009 18 12

Akrafjall: 15 SEP 2009 18:12 Hiking trail in Sólmundarhöfði, Vesturland (Ísland). Great 3 hours hiking (7,7km) on Akranes towns mountain. This is a circle hike on the south summit, lower than the north one but my favorites. Also a narrow path under the summit possible to walk under the cliffs with great view to sea and the capital city Reykjavik. And surly not difficult the main hike but with the narrow path I mark it as such.

Hike Around Strutur Mountain Iceland 19 03 2018

Hike around Strútur Mountain, Iceland (19-03-2018) Hiking trail in Ás, Vesturland (Lýðveldið Ísland). This was a very long hike (35 km) because I started it from Húsafell. To make this hike shorter you can park the car at the beginning of the road F578 (next to the information panels) or by the farm Kalmanstunga (see waypoints on the map). The way along the south side of the Strútur mountain is pretty nice, with a path easy to find that goes between the mountain and the river. After some kilometers you should start turning north following the mountain´s foot. In that part the path is harder to find, although you don´t necessarily need to follow any path to continue. Finally, when you get to the northern side of the mountain you will find a 4x4 track that meets the road F578 after few kilometers. Once you get to that road, just continue all the way back to the starting point. Notice that, because I didn’t want to pass through the farm Kalmanstunga, I bypassed it going up and down the slope next to it. This was actually a bad idea, since I needed to jump several fences and a brook. I guess it’s better just to pass through the farm, although I wander if the farmers like to see hikers walking around in their property… Strútur mountain is surrounded by the lava field Hallmundarhraun at north, east and south. During this hike you can see beautiful lava formations, especially at the valley on the north side. Besides, in that valley there are two very famous lava caves: Víðgelmir and Surtshellir. The second one is located just few hundreds of meters from the road F578 (see waypoint on the map).

Helgrindur 27 Aug 2011 10 11

Helgrindur: 27 AUG 2011 10:11 Hiking trail in Búðir, Vesturland (Ísland). Hiking in fairly good wether, little fog at the top and some rain. I am ranking this as Very difficult, but could be avoided by taking track around the "rock walls" we went down.

Oddahringur Og Soguslodir History Trail And Oddar

Oddahringur og söguslóðir - History trail and Oddar Hiking trail in Ás, Vesturland (Lýðveldið Ísland). First we hiked around the history trail at the old farm up to the fox trap. From there the path was to the Oddar - blue trail. We stopped at the old sheep fold Kiðárrétt , at Oddar and at the confluence of Hvita river and Nordlingafljot river, where they meet below Tungan and the rock Þjófaborg, where thieves supposedly were hung in previous times. From there we hiked back to the hotel.

Akrafjall And The Haihnukur Peak Near Akranes

Akrafjall and the Haihnukur peak near Akranes Hiking trail in Akranes, Vesturland (Ísland). Back and forth path from parking. Small fall at the beginning. - Háihnúkur (2.4 km) After about 1km there is a rocky section that can be difficult for some people. Not steep but trail is not zigzagging so a bit splippery when going down. Windy. Happy to have done it. The path to the other mountain top seems better (less rocks in the path).

Selgil Husafell

Selgil - Húsafell Hiking trail in Reykholt, Vesturland (Ísland). Selgil - Húsafell. Very nice trail. In winter some ice and snow, crampons required. We came the same way back as the river was too treacherous to cross. Beautiful waterfall.

Budakirkja Budarklettur Budahellir

Budakirkja - Búðarklettur - Búðahellir Hiking trail in Búðir, Vesturland (Ísland). wonderful walk from the beach over species-rich green lavafield on top of the ridge of the volcano crater Búðarklettur and to a small walk-on-able cave (about 50 m deep). Nearly same way back to the chirch.

27 km

Eldborg

Eldborg Hiking trail in Jarðlangsstaðir, Vesturland (Lýðveldið Ísland). This is a hike from the side road / inn / stables at Eldborg, up to the rim of the volcanic cinder cone. It is clearly visible from the highway, and well worth stopping for. The path winds around the lip of a smaller cinder cone, and then most of the lip of the larger one is chained off. But you get a good view of the interior and the surrounding coast.

8.1 km

Brattabrekka

Brattabrekka Hiking trail in Hvammur, Vesturland (Ísland). I had always been puzzled as to why this mountain pass was referred to as "Brattabrekka" ("Steep Slope") as it didn't feature any unusual gradients. It wasn't until last summer that I discovered that the roadway had actually been moved between valleys and away from the "steep slope" while retaining the name. Ever since I have wanted to hike the old road (disused for at least 30 years, possibly longer) - today I did it! I must admit that along some stretches I probably didn't follow the original roadway, it has completely disappeared. Still, where the topography required cuts to be made you can still make them out - and those are of course the interesting bits. A pleasant two hour walk.

Around Hitarvatn Day 2 3

Around Hítarvatn day 2/3 Hiking trail in Búðardalur, Vesturland (Ísland). Around Hítarvatn day 2/3. Idea to go from tjaldbrekka vid Hítarvatn to Tröllakirkja, along Smjörhnúkur and connect down at Vatnaleið (Skálaleið). Was not sure which way to go on top of Smjörhnúkur so just came down after summiting Tröllakirkja. Was alone so did not take any risks on a windy day... Unmarked trail, but easy to navigate in good weather. Terrain is pretty rough and the climb to Trællakirkja from the tjaldbrekka has quite a bit loose rocks. You might need to check if there´s a safer way up. I followed a wikiloc trail but the tjaldleið map shows to approach the summit from the left side, not straight on from the valley.

69 km

Husafellsland Grettistak Utfall Baejargil

Húsafellsland, Grettistak, Útfall, Bæjargil Hiking trail in Ás, Vesturland (Lýðveldið Ísland). Gönguferð um Húsafellsland, lagt upp frá Hótel Húsafelli að gamla bænum og kvíunum frá dögum sr. Snorra Björnssonar. Þaðan lá leiðin vestur gamla veginn undir Útfjalli upp hallann fyrir ofan eyðibýlið Reyðarfell og staldrað við hjá Grettistaki, stórum stein frá síðustu ísöld, sem ber við himinn á fjallsbrúninni. Þaðan lá austan við Reyðarfellið, upp með Hrossadölum, síðan sveigt til austurs og Útfjallið þverað að Bæjargili, komið að gilinu við fossinn og gestabókina. Þaðan lá svo leiðin niður að gamla bæ og heim að hótelinu. A hike at Husafell, started from the hotel across to the old farm and the sheep-folds from the time of pastor Snorri Björnsson, who lived at Husafell around the time of the French revolution. From there the route went towards West below the mountain following the old road to Husafell until the ruins of Reydarfell (a farm from the time of the settlement of Iceland) upwards towards a big erratic rock from last ice age. From there the route went towards the Valley of the Horses, east of the mountain Reydarfell. Then the path was taken towards East across the mountain Útfjall and the Baejarfell Canyon reached by the waterfall and the guestbook. Finally the route went down to the old Husafell farm and from there back to the hotel.

Glymur With Rivercrossing

Glymur with rivercrossing Hiking trail in Hvanneyri, Vesturland (Ísland). Beautiful trail. You walk a lot on stones and rocks. This can be dangerous when it’s freezing. You have to cross the river twice. Make sure you have a towel with you It’s not easy to cross. The water is very cold and you need to walk over slippery stones. You can cross the river at the top of the waterfall. Look for point 7. It’s save to cross there. We walked a little bit further to find a smaller piece of the river to cross. It was challenging, but an amazing experience!

Hatunga Tunga From Husafell Iceland 12 02 2018

Hátunga (Tunga) from Húsafell, Iceland (12-02-2018) Hiking trail in Ás, Vesturland (Lýðveldið Ísland). I started this route from the hotel. I walked along the road until I crosses the bridge (see waypoint, you can park the car before the bridge as well). From there I jumped the fence and went straight to meet the mountain's slope, passing first through a small birch "forest". Then I ascended a couloir with snow that led me to the top of the mountain (the last meters the couloir turned quite steep and icy). From there it was just an easy walk to the summit, located few hundred of meteres to the west. For the descent I walked down to the east to meet the road close to the Kalmanstunga farm. Finally, I walked along the road back to hotel. Notice that some of the couloirs on the south side of the mountain can be quite steep and icy in winter, so do not attemp that way if you aren't experienced enough in this kind of terrain. When there is not snow, those couloirs are covered with loose stones, so I don't think it's a pleasant way to climb this mountain in warmer seasons. The views from the top of this mountain are outstanding.

63 km

Kirkjufell

Kirkjufell Hiking trail in Grundarfjörður, Vesturland (Ísland). Kirkjufell is claimed to be the most photographed mountain in the country. I bet it is because it was one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones but I am sure it is also because it is a really beautiful mountain. Even though Kirkjufell is not a high mountain it doesn't mean it is an easy one to climb. Right at the beginning of the climb there is a signpost that warns us of the dangers of trying to get to the top. You can see the signpost in one of the pictures. The signpost says that this mountain should be attempted only for experienced mountaineers. It shows valuable advice although it also recommends wearing a climbing harness. A climbing harness is not of much help without a rope and anchors where to secure the climb. I couldn't see any fixed anchor on my way up. I guess they had a few accidents here with inexperienced tourists who thought this mountain was just an easy walk to the summit, and they are trying to prevent those people from even starting. The hike starts at the big parking lot that is on the other side of the road. The first few hundred meters are mainly flat and soon it starts getting quite steep. Most of the time it's just walking following the fairly well-marked track that goes up, but there are 4 or 5 spots where a bit of climbing is required. In those spots there is a fixed rope installed that helps us move forward. Those spots are not that difficult but we need to be very careful because if we fall we are going to fall many meters down. The last of these ropes gives us access to the summit. The summit is a narrow but long flat area that goes towards the sea. The views from the top are really beautiful. Going down is maybe a bit more scary than going up since we can see how steep the track is. If we go slowly and are a bit careful everything will be ok and the track will bring us back to the car. Full description and more pictures at Back from Summit: Kirkjufell

Hellissandur

Hellissandur Hiking trail in Hellissandur, Vesturland (Ísland). I wouldn't say that it's an hard walk, but there's no a real trail to go up and it's very muddy and slippery over there and it's not nice to walk. The view of the glacier on the back it's amazing. With cramps it's far better if you wanna keep going up to thetop

Strutur Peak West Iceland 03 11 17

Strútur peak, West Iceland (03-11-17) Hiking trail in Ás, Vesturland (Lýðveldið Ísland). This hike is quite long (26 km) if you start it from Húsafell, like I did. The best option to make it shorter is to drive up to the beginning of the road F578 and park next to the information panels (see first waypoint on the map). From there you just need to walk along the road until the curve before the road goes downwards. At that point take the 4x4 track that goes to the right (see second waypoint). This track goes all the way up to the peak so you won’t get lost if you follow it. However, my route only follows part of that track because I decided to take a shortcut going directly to the west edge of the mountain. Notice that in my way down I also took a shortcut that unfortunately wasn’t short at all. The lower half of the mountain is full of wire fences and drain channels that you need to jump in order to get to the main road, so I do not recommend following that descent. If the weather conditions are good, the view from this peak is very spectacular, with Hallmundarhraun lava field to the north, Eiríksjökull glacier to the east, Hafrafell peak and Langjökull glacier to the south-east, Þorisjökull glacier and Ok Volcano to the south, and the pyramidal Baula peak to the west.

34 km

Around Hitarvatn Day 1 3

Around Hítarvatn day 1/3 Hiking trail in Sodulsholt, Vesturland (Ísland). Aound Hítarvatn day 1. Made a three-day loop, following tjaldleið on the northern side of Hítavatn and connecting to skálaleið on the southern side of Hítavratn. This section (from Hliðarvatn to Hítarvatn is unmarked. Followed a wikiloc trail but got often carried away by sheep trails. I would not exactly follow this trail as it zigzags through but it+s an idea if you want to do a loop instead of the full Vatnaleið.

Hvanneyri Glymur

Hvanneyri glymur Hiking trail in Hvanneyri, Vesturland (Ísland). Really great hike. steep and a log river crossing IN The BEGINNING- and a real to your knees river crossing at the top of the hike. Chose to Carry our 10 year old across the top crossing (nor an option at the bottom- the 12 year old walking in mother's sandals in the cold water. Make sure to cross the river at the log and make your climb on the far side of the river from the parking lot. And our advice is that you just follow the route down we did not. We went down following a +/- track close the the river and canyon but the views were not great going down and the track not great either

Tour Around Stykkisholmur

Tour around Stykkishólmur Hiking trail in Stykkishólmur, Vesturland (Ísland). The beautiful village of Stykkishólmur is often an overnight stop for tourists, but it is also worth taking a look at the village itself. Armed with a map from Wikiloc, I looked up the attractions of the village and improvised this route myself. The eye-catcher is of course the lighthouse that stands on a small hill overlooking the village. It also gives a nice view over the small harbor where the ferry is situated that sails to the Westfjords. The modern church is also worth a stop as this is one of the more daring churches in Iceland in terms of design. In the village center there are some historic houses such as the Norwegian House and Volcano Museum. At the Library of Water a climb brings you up to a top where you have a nice view over the village and the church. Stykkishólmur is also a great place to do street photography.
