Vestrahorn Iceland

Vestrahorn, Iceland Hiking trail in Höfn, Austurland (Lýðveldið Ísland). Vestrahorn, Iceland Trail starts easily, through the Viking Village (built as a film set) and along the beach. Gets harder as you go up the hill, lots of spongy moss! The steep descent is the hard part, over "scree" (loose stones and rocks). When we did it, due to cloud, we couldn't see the top from the bottom, and when we were at the top, we couldn't see where we were! Walking poles are helpful, but take care, there are cliffs!

Iceland 04 Chasing Waterfalls Hengifoss

Iceland 04: Chasing Waterfalls - Hengifoss Hiking trail in Egilsstaðir, Austurland (Ísland). I parked the car in the parking lot and directly started going uphill. I took the trail on the right by crossing the bridge over the river. I will get back from the trail on the left. You can start from the left if you want but make sure to return from the opposite side because each trail offers you a different view over the valley, the river and the many waterfalls that you will encounter on your way up and down. Personally, I preferred the left side of the river. It is a very easy trail to follow going uphill all the time. Make sure to take your time and enjoy the scenery all around you. After 2.1 km, you will arrive at a wooden bridge and continue in a beautiful, relatively straight trail. You will be walking by the river with a lot of waterfalls coming down from everywhere. At 2.75 km from the starting point, you will reach the amazing Hengigoss Waterfall. It is really an impressive nature's beauty to enjoy. Once on your way back, don't cross the bridge. Just take the trail on your right. As I told you, the views from that side are spectacular. You will have the best view over Litlanesfoss waterfall and many others. After that, you will reach back your car and close the loop. Definitely, I would recommend doing that hike. I consider it easy to moderate. Enjoy and stay safe !!!

Islandia Hvannagil Canyon Via Raftagil Canyon

Islandia: Hvannagil Canyon via Raftagil Canyon Hiking trail in Starmýri, Austurland (Lýðveldið Ísland). English translation: Nice circular route enjoying spectacular landscapes. This version through the Raftagil canyon is shorter than the original route that starts at Stafafell. To get to the starting point of the route, leave the Ring Road following the indication Graenahlid. You have to drive a couple of km along this gravel road, we went in a normal car. Park next to a country house with the name Fellshamar (see photos). From there walk about 200m along the road until you see on the right the Raftagil ravine. Enter the ravine following a narrow path on the left of the ravine. Follow the course of the creek, from time to time you have to wade the small river. The canyon is beautiful with much vegetation. Arriving at a waterfall, leave the ravine, climbing up untill you reach the path that comes from Stafafell. From there the path is marked with wooden sticks or stone mounds. Upon reaching the Hvannagil Canyon you can enjoy from the viewpoint the breathtaking views of this colorful canyon. Begin the descent to the canyon. There you follow the course of the river that you will have to wade in a couple of occasions, in our case in summer the water level was low and it could be done without problems. At the exit of the canyon you arrive at the gravel road that takes you back to the place where you left the car, passing through an area with many summer houses.

Hvannagil Canyon Jokulsa I Loni River Stafafell

HVANNAGIL CANYON. JOKULSÁ I LÓNI RIVER. STAFAFELL Hiking trail in Starmýri, Austurland (Lýðveldið Ísland). JOKULSÁ I LÓNI RIVER. STAFAFELL Jökulsá i Lóni is a big river coming from the eastern of Vatnajökull. It runs through the rugged landscape of Lonsöraefa before descendint on the floods and ends the jurney in Lónsvik. In his course, he receives diferent tributaries streams. Many Icelanders highly recommended this place, as it’s a Kingdom of Hvavvagil Canyon, one of de most stunning canyons in the whole country, whith amazingly colourful from rhyolite rocks. Route: Lonsoraefi (47 m) – Hvannagil Canyon (72 m) – Hvannagil Canyon exit (100 m) – Hvannagil Canyon viewpoint (168 m) – Selgil (210 m) – Raftagil (169 m) – Selfgil N zone (130 m) – Gildrufjall W zone (147 m) – Ring Road 1 (35 m) – Lonsoraefi Route (15 m) – Fellshamar (30 m) – Lonsoraefi (47 m) Access: Stafafell, in the South East Iceland, about 70 km west of Djípivogur amd 30 km east of Höfn Trail description: We have started the route in the area known as Lónsörafi, just where the canyon of Hannavegil joins the Jökulsa and Lóni river. We head towards the ridge and go over the course of the river, which we will cross a few times. This time we have not had to barefoot, but it usually happens to have to to ford by wading on foo. Between riolite walls, with all the colors of the rainbow we walk about a kilometer and half. When you see a path that climbs to the left side of the canyon, we take it to gain altitude and position ourselves above, from where we enjoy excellent views. We get to a viewpoint with panoramic views from the canyon and some peaks of the NO part of the Vatnajökull glacier. We are on top of a plateau where we begin to walk towards ESE until we find the Selgil course, where we return the stream to a small but beautiful waterfall. Now we follow the course of the stream that joins its neighbor Raftagil. There are some wooden sticks path, follows parallel to the stream until this one turns to S. Just at this point, we follow the path marked with wooden stiks and we go direction to the small hill of Selfgil, which borders on its slope N. Continuing walking through this immense meadow in the direction of Gildrufjall that borders on the W side. We approach near the river Jökulsá and Lóni, which is 70 meters below, and by sheep we go down to find the Ring Road 1. From this point We will return to find the car, which is 5 kilometers up, going back to the Lónsöraefi Route, a trail that goes into the mountain on the left bank of the river Mapping: Iceland Topo - Scala: 1: 25,000-1: 750,000 - Source: Landmælingar Íslands (LMÍ)

Seyðisfjörður walk above town beautiful views Hiking trail in Seyðisfjörður, Austurland (Ísland). Easy but beautiful walk above town with great views and waterfalls. If you stay here then certainly walk this walk. The only steep parts are the 50 meters after musical art monument Tsvingonur and two river beddings 300 meters after the climb. Nothing scary and dry, so no worries. After this it is all just easy peasy. Walk goes through meadows above town and even through cultivated forest.

East Fjords Viknaslodir 5 Days 4 Nights From Storurd To Seydisfjordur

EAST FJORDS - VIKNASLODIR - 5 DAYS/4 NIGHTS (from Stórurð to Seyðisfjörður) Hiking trail in Bakkagerði, Austurland (Ísland). Beautiful Hike from Storurd to Bakkagerði and Seyðisfjörður, going through Breiðuvíkurskáli and Loðmundarfjarðarskáli, in the beautiful region of East Fjords in Iceland. Both the camping of Bakkagerdi and the huts have cooking facilities, so you do not even need to bring your cooking equipment as I did (but you need to bring food!). The huts were 9500 ISK per night and the camping 2500 ISK, and 800 ISK extra to use the hut and cooking facilities. You can book the huts in: https://www-ferdaf-is.translate.goog/index.php/skalar?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en DAY 1 - Storurd to Bakkagerdi 16.9 km +735 m -728 m I flew to Egilsstadir, where I checked the Reindeer museum, and hitchhiked to the beginning of the hike. I walked to Storurd, where Giant Boulders are scattered in the middle of blue waters coming from the Glaciers around, in the beautiful peaks of Dyrfjoll. From Storurd I took the long route that goes to Bakkagerdi around Tindfell, but you can do a faster and more efficient route hiking back a little bit and following this trail: https://ca.wikiloc.com/rutes-senderisme/storurd-fra-bakkagerdi-78370352 I camped along the way, because it was getting late, and the ground was quite wet (end of spring) and I was tired already. DAY 2 - finishing trail to Bakkagerdi. 10 km +191m -732m Next day I just kept going to Bakkagerdi, 10 more km, that is actually a more convenient place to sleep that the one I did. I saw torrent ducks in the river, and I just missed the raindeer for a moment, as some hikers saw them. In Bakkagerdi I slept in ÁlftaBorg, the elfs palace camping. It´s a beautiful location, with the Álfta café, supermarket, a the KHB Brewery and Borgarfjordur, where I hitchiked to see the puffins very very close ;) DAY 3 - Bakkagerdi to Bredavik - 17.26 km +832m -862m Beautiful hike to Brúnavik, where there is a shelter hut. There were a lot of birds and a beautiful beach. Then I hiked to the Breidavik and I spend there the night having the hut for myself, just a luxury. I camped and used the hut as it was way cheaper. The beach is close (20 min) and wild, good to take a look at it. DAY 4 - Bredavik to Lodmunfjordur - 26.61 km +1133m -1112m Very beautiful day, pretty hard and long. If you have the time, I recommend you to sleep in Húsavik Hut. I decided to take the unmarked trail that goes close to the Shark Mountain (Háukarlshaus). It was quite wet and was difficult to find a good trail. After crossing the first flat area, I think that the best trail is the one following the right side of the river, I discovered that a bit later on my hike. This hike was very beautiful, with the fog, the surrounding mountains and the views of the sea. It's also hard and difficult in case it's bad weather or fog. From the pass there are beautiful views to Hvítserkur and all the surrounding valleys. Then I descended to find the road to Húsavik hut and kept going up through a dirt road. From the top you descend to the valley in a long hike with amazing views of the Lodmundarfjordur fjord. DAY 5 - Lodmundarfjordur hut to Eysafjordur - 21.24 km +706m -709m It was a crew in the hut that were filming a documentary about the Eider ducks. It seems that in the bay they have the biggest colony of Eider ducks in Iceland. You will see this while hiking, and you will take the last ascent that is quite long, to descend to Seydisfjordur. If you are lucky you can hitchike the last 7km to town, but it´s not so many cars to be honest. Seydisfjordur is a beautiful town with cafés, and bars, and the camping is just next to the famous Seydisfjarkirkja. I slept in the camping and next day I took the bus to the airport to fly back to Reykjavik.

Bjolfur Circle

Bjolfur Circle Hiking trail in Seyðisfjörður, Austurland (Ísland). A beautiful day hike. Quite long and some furting may be required (depending on weather). The return trip is along a road, with luck you can hitchhike back to the town. After the lake, I lost the official trail for a while. The 19km (from Campsite to the point where a nice person picked me up in his car) took me almost 7 hours. 5 of which were actually walking, the remaining 2 hours were short and long breaks.

Wilerness Center Panorama Way

Wilerness Center Panorama Way Hiking trail in Reyðarfjörður, Austurland (Ísland). A fairly comfortable hike from the Wilderness Center to the highland with panoramas and interesting historical areas. It basically follows the stream from the parking lot and up the hill. It is based on old sheep and horse trail. The path up to the gate is marked with sticks. Please respect the sheep.

Sandholatindur

Sandhólatindur Hiking trail in Vestdalseyri, Austurland (Lýðveldið Ísland). Sandhólatindur (also named Hákarlshaus, or Shark Head) 1154 m (65°18.649-14°00.339). Seyðisfjörður's highest mountain. It's best to cross the Vestdalsá river via the bridge just above the waterfall (65°17.021-14°01.439), then walk up the western mountain slope. You will need to bypass the cliffs on the way up, but after that everything will be easy.

Hoffell Geitasfell Climb And Wandering

Hoffell Geitasfell Climb and wandering Hiking trail in Hoffell, Austurland (Lýðveldið Ísland). Did not summit because of low visibility at peak. We stopped at the end of the markers. There is another very steep, scramble of another 400m to summit Geitasfelltindur. We lost the markers a few times so wandered a little on sheep paths working our at back to the main trail.

Baegsli Snjofjallstindur Hringleid

Bægsli-Snjófjallstindur (hringleið) Hiking trail in Eyrar, Austurland (Lýðveldið Ísland). The easiest route is up Salteyrardalur valley from the old airstrip, making the final climb via the east slope. Another fairly good route takes you along the Austdalur and then Hrossadalir valleys, in which case you ascend the southern slope. It's also easy to walk between Bægsli and Snjófjallstindur. Snjófjallstindur (named Snjófell on some maps) 1028 m (65°14.757-13°50.121). The direct route starts from the parking area in Austdalur valley. Go up that valley and then into the Hrossadalir valleys (65°15.487-13°49.304), from which you should climb above a line of cliffs in the slope and then maintain your elevation until you can access the peak via the steep scree on its eastern slope. You can also easily walk here from Bægsli.

Brunavik Circle

Brunavik Circle Hiking trail in Bakkagerði, Austurland (Ísland). A nice day hike in Borgarfjörður eystr. From the Campsite to the ending point approx. 13,5km. From the ending point you still need to walk back to the campsite (paved road). The entire trip took me about 3,5 hours walking time (+ breaks). Can be quite wet and muddy. The ascend after the emergency hut is very steep and exhausting. At the end a detour to the harbour Hafnarholmi is worthwhile to see puffins. At the beginning (Holahorn) we missed the official way a bit, therefore the GPS-track leads a bit cross-country.

Bjolfur

Bjólfur Hiking trail in Seyðisfjörður, Austurland (Lýðveldið Ísland). Bjólfur (named after the fjord's first settler) 1085 m. Starting from the Stafdalur skiing lodge (65°14.365-14°06.725), follow the stakes up the slopes of Stafdalsfell until you can cross the Stafdalsá above its uppermost waterfall. Ascending Bjólfur is easy from the west end, using a vehicle track where fibre-optic cable was buried. Although the visitors' book container is in the rock cairn on the summit (65°15.890-14°03.668), it pays to descend about 70 m onto the next shoulder below to enjoy the fabulous view of Seyðisfjörður.

Hofn City Walk

Höfn city walk Hiking trail in Höfn, Austurland (Ísland). Calling this a city walk requires a suspensension of your disbelieve, because Höfn is one of the larger villages in Iceland, but certainly not a city. On a rainy day I took a walk through this place and initially I was pleasantly surprised. All of a sudden a boulder park pops up and the path next to the coastline is certainly beautiful. However, when I cross the village the walk becomes a bit more boring with visits through residential areas and street roads. When I was hit was with some really nasty showers I was very glad to go back to my hotel.
