About this vehicle
This is a Dacia Duster with a roof tent bolted on, and that combination matters: inside, it drives and handles like a normal 4WD SUV — no living quarters eating into legroom or storage. At night, the tent pops up on the roof and sleeps up to three.
It suits travelers who want genuine gravel-road and light F-road access during the day and don't mind camping up top rather than in a built-out van interior. Setup and pack-down take a few minutes each way, which is a fair trade for keeping the vehicle itself nimble on rough roads.
Manual transmission, real 4WD — the same drivetrain logic as the standard Duster, just with a place to sleep strapped to the roof.
Where it can take you
4WD makes gravel roads genuinely fine — Westfjords, Snæfellsnes, and most connector gravel routes. Lighter F-roads open up in summer (F208 south, F35 Kjölur) driven sensibly. No unbridged river crossings — this isn't a highlands truck. One legal note specific to campers: wild camping in a vehicle is banned in Iceland since 2015 — you can only camp at registered campsites, roof tent or not.
Winter driving
The 4WD drivetrain is a solid winter Ring Road performer, with studded tyres fitted seasonally (Nov 1–Apr 14) under Icelandic rental law. The roof tent itself is a summer setup in practice — most travelers doing a winter trip in this vehicle should plan to stay at guesthouses or indoor accommodation rather than camping, and confirm with Key Car whether winter camping in the tent is realistically supported before you rely on it.
Luggage & fuel
Soft, squashable bags are strongly recommended over hard suitcases — gear needs to fit around the roof tent mechanism and whatever's needed for camping (sleeping bags, cooking gear) shares the same space as clothing.
Expect around 6–7 l/100km — similar to the standard Duster, since the roof tent adds minimal drag and weight. Check live fuel prices on our gas stations map, and factor in that campsite fees are a separate cost from fuel on this kind of trip.
