About
Europe's largest glacier by volume, covering 8% of Iceland. Multiple active volcanoes hide beneath the ice. Home to countless outlet glaciers and the Vatnajökull National Park.
The scale is incomprehensible. Ice stretches to the horizon. Outlet glaciers calve into lagoons. Everything feels ancient and massive.
Formed about 2,500 years ago. Conceals several of Iceland's most active volcanoes, including Grímsvötn and Bárðarbunga. When they erupt beneath the ice, massive floods called jökulhlaups result.
Don't walk on glaciers without a guide. Ice caves are winter-only. Tours run from Skaftafell, Jökulsárlón, and other points. The ice is retreating noticeably — see it while you can.
