About

Lagarfoss is a waterfall on the Lagarfljót river in East Iceland.

Lagarfoss is a waterfall on the Lagarfljót river in eastern Iceland, located 27 km north of Egilsstaðir. It is 10 m high and 60 m wide; over a stretch of 500 metres the water flows more like a rapid, descending 10 m downstream. The Lagarfoss hydroelectric power station (Lagarfossvirkjun) was built here in 1974 with an initial installed capacity of 8 MW to supply local energy. Because the water was diverted into the power station before reaching the waterfall, the falls often disappeared. The plant was expanded by 20 MW in 2007, and since the Kárahnjúkar power station came into operation that same year, additional water from the Jökulsá á Brú flows into the Lagarfljót, making the waterfall visible more frequently.
