Eyjafjallajökull
About
The volcano that disrupted global air travel in 2010. Ice-capped stratovolcano on the south coast. Still can't pronounce it? That's okay. Locals call it 'E15' sometimes.
Standing at its base, you see the glacier cap and remember that underneath is fire. The 2010 eruption feels recent. The power sleeping here is humbling.
The 2010 eruption wasn't huge, but the ash cloud grounded 100,000 flights worldwide. It became a symbol of how nature can disrupt modern life. The glacier on top made the eruption more explosive.
You can't climb it without a guide and proper gear. The visitor center at Þorvaldseyri farm has great exhibits about the eruption. The nearby Fimmvörðuháls trail crosses between here and Katla.
