Short answer

The Westfjords are the peninsula in Iceland's north-west that the Ring Road does not reach — which is why most trips miss them entirely. Every guide calls the region remote and then shows you Dynjandi. Here is the more useful version: we hold 670 mapped places across 27 categories here, including 34 waterfalls, 32 hot springs and 43 campsites. Remote is an adjective. Thirty-two hot springs is a fact.

What is actually there

Counts of records we hold for this region — not a claim about everything that exists, but everything we have mapped and can point you at. Each links to the full list.

  • 227 peaks
Mostly OSM-derived — this is what we have mapped, not an official summit count.
  • 49 viewpoints
Pull-ins and marked outlooks along the fjord roads.
  • 46 bays
The shape of the whole region — the road follows nearly all of them.
  • 43 campsites
More than you would expect for the population.
  • 34 fjords
    The named fjords themselves.
  • 34 waterfalls
Dynjandi is the one in the photograph; 33 others are mapped.
  • 32 hot springs
Including several roadside pools with no facilities and no queue.
  • 17 lighthouses
A coastline this long collects them.
  • 11 swimming pools
Every village of any size has one.

Eighteen more categories carry Westfjords records too — museums, churches, canyons, capes, glaciers, caves and others — for 670 in total.

Fuel in the region, today

We hold 16 stations across the entire Westfjords. That is the number worth remembering: fill up when you pass one, not when you need one.

The Westfjords — questions people actually ask

Are the Westfjords worth the detour?
They are the part of Iceland most itineraries skip, because the Ring Road does not go there — you have to choose to leave it. What that buys you is the same landscape with a fraction of the traffic. We hold 670 mapped places across 27 categories in the region, including 34 waterfalls and 32 hot springs, and almost none of them have a queue.
How long do the Westfjords take to drive?
Longer than the map suggests, and we deliberately do not print a figure. We hold no road-authority drive time for this region, the roads are gravel in places and weather-dependent everywhere, and a guessed number here would be the single most misleading thing on the page. Check the live road status before you commit to a day.
Do you need a 4x4 in the Westfjords?
Not for the main routes in summer, which are paved or well-maintained gravel. The question is season and weather rather than drive type — several passes close in winter and some gravel stretches are rough enough that a low-clearance car will slow you down considerably.
Where do you fill up in the Westfjords?
We hold 16 fuel stations across the whole region, and the live prices are on this page. That is not many for the distances involved, which is the practical thing to know: fill up when you pass one rather than when you need one.
What is Dynjandi?
The Westfjords’ best-known waterfall — a fan-shaped cascade that widens as it drops, with six smaller falls below it. It is in the photograph at the top of this page. It is genuinely the regional landmark, but it is one of 34 waterfalls we have mapped here.
