About

Hvammsvík Hot Springs is a geothermal lagoon with a natural water temperature of about 10°C in West Iceland.

OpenStreetMap logs the spring water here at about 10°C at the source, and the on-site pools range up to about 42°C — so the temperature moves a lot between where the water surfaces and where you actually get in.

Steam rises around you as you sink into naturally heated water. The contrast of warm water and cold air is pure Iceland.

Most people searching for Iceland hot springs start at the Blue Lagoon — and Hvammsvík is what the second search finds. Same country, opposite philosophy: instead of an engineered lagoon by the airport, eight natural pools stacked along the Hvalfjörður shoreline, 45 minutes from Reykjavík, where the tide walks into the lowest pools twice a day and resets their temperature. The Blue Lagoon is the spectacle; this is the one people whisper about.

Natural hot springs vary in temperature - some spots are scalding, others barely warm. Test with your hand first, always.

Reviews

Frequently
asked
questions

Hvammsvík or the Blue Lagoon?
Different products. The Blue Lagoon is the engineered geothermal spa — silica water, swim-up bar, airport-convenient, priced accordingly. Hvammsvík is natural pools on a fjord shore with tides, sea swimmers and far fewer people. First trip with hours to spare between flights: Blue Lagoon. Escaping the crowd: Hvammsvík.
How warm is the water at Hvammsvík?
It varies by pool, on purpose — the eight natural pools run from sea-cold up to hot-tub warm, and the lowest ones get refreshed by the tide twice a day. Finding your temperature is part of the product; the upper pools are the reliable warm ones.
How far is Hvammsvík from Reykjavík?
About 45 minutes by car along the Hvalfjörður shore — closer than the Golden Circle lagoons and without the airport-corridor traffic of the Blue Lagoon. The drive itself, hugging the fjord, is half the argument for coming.
