Why is Costco fuel so much cheaper than everyone else?
Costco sells fuel near cost to drive memberships — but you need a valid Costco membership card at the pump, and there is exactly one station (Kauptún, Garðabær). Without a membership, the unmanned Orkan and ÓB stations are usually the next cheapest in the capital area.
Should I fill up in Reykjavík before driving the Ring Road?
Yes. Capital-area prices are usually the lowest in the country, and a full tank covers the first long stretch in either direction. Top up again at Borgarnes (heading north) or Selfoss–Hella (heading east along the south coast).
Are unmanned stations in the capital cheaper than staffed ones?
Usually, yes — Orkan and ÓB unmanned pumps typically undercut the staffed N1 and Olís stations by a few krónur per litre. Every pump takes chip-and-PIN cards, so there is no practical downside for a rental driver.
