Short answer

Keflavík (KEF) is Iceland's international airport, on the Reykjanes peninsula at 63.985, -22.606 — about 50 km south-west of Reykjavík, roughly 45 minutes on Route 41. It is not in the city, and there is no train. The Blue Lagoon sits between the two, which is why so many people stop there on the way in or out. If you are collecting a hire car, the table below is the one you will want at the end of the trip.

Refuelling before you hand the car back

Icelandic rental contracts want the tank full on return, and the pumps near the terminal are where that happens. Distances are straight-line from the terminal coordinate, not driving distance.

Keflavík Airport — questions people actually ask

Where is Keflavík Airport?
On the Reykjanes peninsula at 63.985, -22.606 — about 50 km south-west of Reykjavík, not in the city. It is Iceland’s only major international airport, so unless you arrive by ferry or on a domestic flight into Reykjavík city airport, this is where you land.
How do you get from Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík?
Hire car, airport bus or taxi, and the honest comparison of cost and time between them is a page of its own — we keep it at /guides/keflavik-airport-to-reykjavik/ rather than summarising it badly here. The drive is roughly 45 minutes on Route 41, the Reykjanesbraut.
Where is the nearest petrol station to Keflavík Airport?
There are 14 within 12 km of the terminal, and the closest sit about 1.7 km away. The live table on this page ranks them by distance with today’s actual prices, because the last thing you do before returning a hire car is fill the tank — and Icelandic rental contracts require it full.
Is the Blue Lagoon near Keflavík Airport?
Yes — it sits between the airport and Reykjavík, roughly 20 minutes from the terminal, which is why so many people go straight there on arrival or on the way to a departing flight rather than making a separate trip.
Do you need a car in Iceland if you land at Keflavík?
Not for Reykjavík itself, which is walkable and has buses. For anywhere else, effectively yes: Iceland has no passenger rail, and outside the capital the bus network is sparse and seasonal. Most visitors collect a car at the airport for exactly that reason.
