The Proace solves a specific problem: getting nine people and their gear around Iceland in one vehicle instead of splitting into two cars. Automatic, 2WD, and built for road-trip logistics rather than off-road ambition.

It's the practical choice for extended families, work retreats, or groups of friends who'd rather share fuel costs and stay together than coordinate a convoy. The tradeoff is capability — this is a road-focused van, not a gravel machine.

Expect a straightforward, comfortable ride on the Ring Road and Golden Circle, with the automatic gearbox making the long stretches between stops easier on whoever's driving.

Where it can take you

2WD and built for paved roads — Ring Road, Golden Circle, South Coast. F-roads are illegal in a 2WD vehicle and will void your insurance if attempted; good, well-maintained gravel at low speed is fine, but this isn't a car for the Westfjords' rougher unpaved stretches or any highland route.

Winter driving

Capable on cleared, plowed roads with studded tyres fitted seasonally (Nov 1–Apr 14) under Icelandic rental law. Being a tall, long vehicle, it's more affected by strong crosswinds than a lower car — worth checking wind forecasts on exposed stretches like the South Coast before a winter drive.

Luggage & fuel

Group math applies here: with all 9 seats filled, expect around one bag per person, realistically. Drop to 6–7 passengers and there's genuinely spare room for full-size suitcases per person.
