Iceland in July

Facts verified 2026-08-04Updated 2026-08-04Planning

The warmest normals in the table, the highlands provably open on the live board, a 23:59 sunset to start the month — and the honest bits peak season omits.

Short answer

Iceland in July is the year’s maximum: the warmest normals in the table (14.9°C daily high — the source’s own superlative), the highlands provably open (live board below), and a sunset of 23:59 on the 1st. The honest bits: peak prices, the light already leaving — nearly three hours across the month — and Mývatn named for its midges.

How much daylight does Iceland have in July?

07-1003:2423:4220 h 18 m
07-2003:5323:1519 h 21 m

Computed, not copied — sunrise and sunset for 2026 at Reykjavík’s own coordinates (64.15, -21.94), NOAA solar algorithm. The month opens with a 23:59 sunset and never drops under eighteen hours of light — but read the slide: July sheds 2 h 44 m end to end. Midsummer is behind; the year has turned.

The normals make July the warmest month outright — daily high 14.9°C, the highest value in the table, over a low of 9.1°C — with 49.9 mm across 10.3 wet days and 183.1 h of sunshine. Still pack the shell: Icelandic warmth is a wind decision.

Are the highlands open in July?

This is the interior’s month, and the page can show it rather than say it. Vegagerðin’s live feed currently reports 2 highland stretches open to mountain vehicles, 7 closed across the 51 F-roads we map. Landmannalaugar’s rhyolite bowl and Þórsmörk’s braided valley — the photograph above — are July’s twin destinations, joined by the Laugavegur between them.

The constants never move: 4x4 only on any road marked F, river fords are judgement calls with the day’s meltwater, and the mountain huts sell out months before the season starts.

The Mývatn honesty section

The north’s great lake is named for what July brings: Mývatn is Icelandic mý + vatn — “the lake of midges” — from the large numbers of midges present in the summer. They swarm on still days, they are mostly harmless non-biters (Iceland famously has no mosquitoes), and they are the engine of the spectacle: the lake’s wetlands host celebrated concentrations of waterbirds, especially ducks, because the midges feed them.

Practical translation for a Mývatn day: bring or buy a head net, plan the lakeshore for a breezy hour, and know the pseudocraters and Dimmuborgir care nothing for wind.

Can you see the northern lights in July?

No. The table opens with a 23:59 sunset; even on the 31st the sun is only down for about six twilight-bright hours. There is no darkness for an aurora to appear against — the question answers itself in the sunset column. The season reopens when real night returns at the end of August; the aurora page takes over from September.

Driving in July

The whole map, all of it: the Ring Road in prime condition, the Golden Circle best before 09:00 or after 19:00 (the sunset says you can), and the F-roads live-boarded above for the highland legs. July is the year’s tightest rental inventory — campers above all — so the car is the first booking of the trip, not the last. A 4x4 only pays if an F-road is genuinely in the plan; for the paved classics, smaller is cheaper and enough.

Iceland in July — questions people actually ask

Is July a good time to visit Iceland?
It is the month with the fewest asterisks: the warmest normals in the table (14.9°C daily high), every F-road opening or open, puffin cliffs full, whale season running, and days that still top eighteen hours at the month's end. The honest costs: the highest prices and thickest crowds of the year, and the light already flowing out — the month sheds almost three hours of daylight. Book cars and highland huts far ahead; July forgives nothing left late.
Can you see the northern lights in Iceland in July?
No. The computed table starts the month with a 23:59 sunset, and even on the 31st the sun is down for barely six hours of twilight-bright "night". There is no darkness for an aurora to show against — solar activity is irrelevant. The season reopens when true night returns at the end of August; September through March is the honest window.
How warm is Iceland in July?
The warmest of the year, by the book: the 1991–2020 normals give July a 14.9°C mean daily high — the highest value in the Reykjavík table — and a 9.1°C low, with 49.9 mm of rain over about 10 days. Calibrate expectations: a still, sunny 17°C Icelandic afternoon feels glorious; a windy 11°C one needs a shell. Nobody swims in the sea; everybody swims in the pools.
Are the highlands open in July?
Effectively yes — July and August are the interior's season, and this page renders the live Vegagerðin board rather than asserting it. Landmannalaugar's rhyolite slopes, Þórsmörk's braided valley (the photo above), and the Laugavegur trail between them are all in play. The constants: every F-road demands a 4x4 by law and rental contract, river fords are real decisions, and the huts book out months ahead.
What about the midges at Mývatn?
They are in the name: Mývatn is Icelandic mý + vatn — "the lake of midges" — named for the sheer numbers present in summer. They are harmless non-biters in the main (Iceland has no mosquitoes), infuriating in a wind-still hour, and the reason the lake's wetlands host such famous concentrations of ducks: the midges are the food supply. A head net costs little and weighs nothing; locals wear them without embarrassment.
Is July too crowded in Iceland?
The famous ten kilometres are: Gullfoss, Geysir, the south-coast waterfalls and Jökulsárlón run at full capacity in the middle of the day. The fix is the daylight itself — with sunsets after 22:30 all month, visiting the headline stops before 09:00 or after 19:00 restores most of the silence. The highlands, Westfjords and east stay comparatively quiet even now; the crowd follows the same eight stops it always has.
What should I book first for a July trip?
In order: the car (July is the year's tightest rental inventory — campers especially), then highland huts if the Laugavegur or Þórsmörk is the plan, then beds along the south coast, then whale and puffin boats. Flights flex more than the rest. The pattern every year is the same: July's bottleneck is never the sights, it is the sleeping and the wheels.
