About this vehicle

This is the vehicle to book if the highlands are actually the point of your trip. Automatic, seven seats, real 4WD with the ground clearance and low-range gearing to handle rougher F-roads than anything else in the fleet. Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, and the tougher interior routes are realistic in this car in a way they simply aren't in a Duster or Tucson.

It's not cheap, and it doesn't need to be gentle about that — you're paying for genuine highlands capability, not a badge. If your itinerary is Ring Road and Golden Circle only, this is overkill; save the money for a crossover instead.

Seven seats also make it a workable option for a larger family or group who also want off-road access, though luggage space shrinks fast once all seats are in use.

Where it can take you

This is the fleet's genuine highlands vehicle — tougher F-roads that a Duster or Tucson shouldn't attempt are within its range, driven with proper caution. That said, deep or fast-moving river fords are still dangerous in any rental vehicle. Check current conditions before any F-road crossing, and do not attempt a ford you're unsure of — several F-roads have claimed vehicles that misjudged water depth.

Winter driving

Highland F-roads close entirely in winter regardless of vehicle capability, so the Land Cruiser's off-road strengths are a summer story. In winter it's a very capable, heavy Ring Road car — studded tyres fitted seasonally (Nov 1–Apr 14), stable in snow, less affected by wind than lighter SUVs.

Luggage & fuel

With all 7 seats up, expect room for 2 large suitcases — tight. Fold the rear row down and there's substantially more space, closer to what you'd expect from a large SUV with 5 seats in use.

Diesel, expect around 9–10 l/100km. Heavier than the crossovers and it shows at the pump, but diesel efficiency partly offsets the size. Check live fuel prices on our gas stations map — diesel and petrol prices can differ station to station.

Frequently
asked
questions

Can the Land Cruiser cross rivers on F-roads?
It has the clearance and drivetrain for many F-road river crossings that other rental vehicles can't attempt, but depth and current change fast and misjudging a ford is genuinely dangerous. Check current conditions before any crossing, and do not attempt one you're unsure of.
Is the Land Cruiser worth it for a Ring Road-only trip?
Probably not. If your route stays on Route 1 and the Golden Circle, a crossover like the Tucson or Vitara does the job for less. Book the Land Cruiser when the highlands are actually on your itinerary.
How much luggage fits with all 7 seats in use?
About 2 large suitcases realistically. Drop to 5 passengers and folding the rear seats down opens up much more room.
Do I need experience for F-road driving in the Land Cruiser?
Capability in the vehicle doesn't replace driver judgment. Go slowly, know the route, and don't cross water you can't assess — confirm current F-road and river status before you set off.
