Sólheimajökull

About

An outlet glacier from Mýrdalsjökull, just 2 hours from Reykjavík. Popular for glacier hikes and ice climbing. The dark stripes are volcanic ash layers.

Standing on ice that's been forming for centuries. Blue ice, black ash layers, crevasses. The crampons bite into ancient ice. Accessible but still wild.

Fed by Mýrdalsjökull, which covers Katla volcano. The ash stripes record volcanic eruptions. The glacier has retreated dramatically — old photos show how much ice has been lost.

Easy to reach but don't walk on the ice alone. Guided tours include crampons and safety gear. The retreat is visible — the parking lot used to be much closer to the ice. Book tours ahead in summer.
