About

Eyjafjallajökull, sometimes referred to by the numeronym E15, is one of the smaller ice caps of Iceland, north of Skógar and west of Mýrdalsjökull. The ice cap covers the caldera of a volcano with a summit elevation of 1,651 metres (5,417 ft).

Ancient ice creaks and groans. It's constantly moving, just too slowly for us to see.

The ice cap covers the caldera of a volcano with a summit elevation of 1,651 metres (5,417 ft). The volcano has erupted relatively frequently since the Last Glacial Period, most recently in 2010, when, although relatively small for a volcanic eruption, it caused enormous disruption to air travel across northern and western Europe for a week..

Glacier tours are worth the money. You get crampons, ice axes, and someone who knows where it's safe to step.

Frequently
asked
questions

Can I walk on Eyjafjallajökull without a guide?
No. Crevasses on Eyjafjallajökull are often hidden under fresh snow and can be lethal — every glacier walk needs crampons, ropes and a certified guide. Book through a licensed tour operator, never freelance it.
How do I get to Eyjafjallajökull?
Eyjafjallajökull is located in South Coast. Check live road conditions on this page before you drive — highland access often needs a 4×4 and some routes only open in summer.
When is the best time to visit Eyjafjallajökull?
Eyjafjallajökull is most accessible in summer, when access roads are clear of snow. Check live road conditions before you drive.
Is Eyjafjallajökull shrinking?
Most Icelandic glaciers have retreated measurably over the past few decades. Exact edges and access points shift year to year — treat any online map, including this one, as approximate.
