Whale season in Iceland runs April to October, peaking June through August when feeding brings humpbacks and minke whales close to shore. Some boats sail all year: the northern fjords stay sheltered enough that winter trips out of Akureyri still go, and orcas show up off Snæfellsnes in late winter chasing herring.

Where matters as much as when. Húsavík built its name on whales and has the highest sighting rates in the country; Akureyri sails a calm fjord, which is the seasickness-friendly option; Reykjavík is the convenient one if the old harbour is a ten-minute walk from your hotel. Seeing whales in Iceland is never guaranteed, so most operators hand out a free second trip if the sea shows you nothing.
