The Icelandic horse is the only horse breed in Iceland — imported by the settlers, then bred in isolation for a thousand years. It's small, thick-coated, and has gaits other horses don't, including the tölt, a smooth four-beat run you can drink coffee during. Icelandic law is absolute about protecting it: no horses come into the country, and any horse that leaves never returns.

Why can't Icelandic horses return to Iceland?
Disease protection — the isolated population has almost no immunity to common equine illnesses, so Iceland bans all horse imports, including its own horses coming home from competitions abroad. Used riding gear can't be brought in either without disinfection.
