Grjótagjá

About

Lava cave with hot spring near Mývatn. Yes, it's the Game of Thrones cave. Currently too hot to bathe (temps change over time) but worth seeing.

A small lava cave near Mývatn with a thermal spring inside. Famous from Game of Thrones. Beautiful to see even if you can't bathe.

Steam rises from blue water beneath lava formations. The cave is intimate, mystical. The Game of Thrones fame brought crowds, but it's still atmospheric.

Locals bathed here for decades until volcanic activity in the 1970s-80s raised the water temperature too high. It has cooled somewhat but is still unpredictable.

Currently too hot for comfortable bathing — temperatures vary. Free to visit. Respect the 'no swimming' signs. The cave is beautiful regardless. Best experienced on a Mývatn day trip.
