Reynisfjara
Reynisfjara
About
Reynisfjara is a popular black sand beach in southern Iceland near the town of Vík í Mýrdal. It is part of the Katla UNESCO Global Geopark on privately owned land.
Iceland's most famous black sand beach. Towering basalt columns, crashing waves, and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks offshore. Dramatic and dangerous in equal measure.
The black sand crunches under your feet. Waves explode against dark rocks. Wind whips. The basalt columns look like a giant pipe organ. It's moody, powerful, unforgettable.
Legend says the sea stacks were trolls caught by sunrise while trying to drag a ship ashore. The basalt columns formed as lava cooled. Game of Thrones filmed here.
Never turn your back on the ocean. Sneaker waves here have killed people. Seriously. Watch from the safe zones, don't get too close to the water. The hexagonal columns are famous — but don't climb them.
