Reynisfjara beach

Reynisfjara

Iceland's most famous black sand beach - and one of its most dangerous. Volcanic black sand, towering basalt columns, dramatic sea stacks (Reynisdrangar) rising from the surf. The beach is genuinely striking. The basalt columns look like pipe organs carved by giants. On clear days, the contrast of black sand, white waves, and blue sky is unreal. But respect this place. Sneaker waves have killed tourists here. The waves come suddenly and powerfully, much further up the beach than you'd expect. Never turn your back on the ocean. People have been swept away taking selfies. Near Vík on the south coast. Gets very crowded - early morning or evening visits are better. One of Iceland's must-sees despite the dangers.

Diamond Beach beach

Diamond Beach

Where icebergs from Jökulsárlón lagoon wash up on black volcanic sand. The contrast is extraordinary - crystal-clear ice chunks scattered across dark beach like diamonds. The ice comes in all sizes, from small chunks to car-sized blocks. Some are ancient glacier ice, blue from compression. They shift and sparkle in the light. Just across the road from Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Often photographed at sunrise or sunset when the light makes the ice glow. Free to visit, always accessible. Peak tourist destination but the beach is big enough to find quieter spots. South coast essential.
