Strandir is one of the most remote corners of Iceland, a wild stretch of coast in the Westfjords that few visitors ever reach. If you’re looking for something different from the usual tours, this is a great choice. The region has a dark history of witchcraft and witch-hunts, and this tour follows that story. We leave Reykjavík early and drive to Hólmavík, the largest village in Strandir. Here we visit the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft, which tells the stories of the people accused, the spells they used, and what happened to them. From there, we follow the shore of Steingrímsfjörður, where humpback whales are often seen in the fjord. Next is the Sorcerer’s Cottage, a reconstructed turf house that shows how people lived in the 17th century. Life was hard, and it’s easy to see why some turned to magic for help. Then we continue to Djúpavík. During the herring boom, it was a busy village. Today it’s almost empty, and the huge old factory still stands by the water. Just north of Djúpavík is Krossneslaug, one of the most remote swimming pools in the world. It sits right on the beach, and you can soak in warm water while looking out over the North Atlantic.
