Landmannalaugar is a world of lava fields and rhyolite mountains streaked in pink, brown, and green, with patches of yellow, blue, purple, and black. It’s out in Iceland’s highlands and well off the usual tourist routes, so you’ll share the views with far fewer people. Price is per vehicle. Why choose a private tour? Your trip, your way. We have a suggested route, but it’s only a starting point. If something catches your interest, we can change plans to fit it. Go at your own pace. No one’s hurrying you back to the bus. Stay as long as you like wherever you like. A guide who knows the place. Our guides know the history, the culture and the spots most visitors miss, and they’re happy to share all of it. Nothing to organize. We take care of transport, bookings and the rest of the logistics. You just enjoy the day. The route We leave Reykjavík and drive about 150 kilometers through farmland. Then the landscape changes completely. For the last 30-plus kilometers, the road crosses a bare volcanic plain that looks more like desert than anything you’d expect in Iceland, with glacial streams and steaming ground along the way. From here it’s gravel roads and river crossings. We stop at Ljótipollur, a crater formed in an eruption in 1477 and now filled with deep blue water. Then we continue past Lake Frostastaðavatn before arriving at Landmannalaugar. At Landmannalaugar You’ll have 2 to 3 hours here. If you’re up for it, we’ll head out on a hike of about an hour, then come back and soak in the natural hot spring. If you’d rather explore on your own, that’s fine too. The way back We return on the Dómadalur route, which winds through lava fields and between mountains. It crosses several rivers and passes a few waterfalls. Something extra We’re a family-run company, and we like to make each trip your own. Depending on the time, the weather and how everyone’s feeling, your guide may add a stop or two along the way. Pick up /drop off: We’ll pick you up from your hotel or the nearest bus stop, starting at 9 AM, and bring you back at the end of the day. If another start time suits you better, just ask. Your driver-guide stays with you for the whole trip. They’ll handle the driving, keep you comfortable, and tell you about the places you’re seeing along the way.
