Natural ice caves form under Vatnajökull's outlet glaciers each winter as meltwater carves tunnels — the electric-blue ones from the photos — and are safe to enter roughly November to March, always with a guide.
The Langjökull ice cave is the other kind: a tunnel drilled into Iceland's second-largest glacier, open all year regardless of weather. Less raw, far more predictable — the right pick outside winter.
