About this tour
Delve deep underground on an adventurous lava tunnel tour just 30 minutes from Reykjavík. Raufarhólshellir is an ideal tour for geology buffs and adventure-seekers. You will see the inner workings of a volcanic eruption while walking in the path of lava that flowed thousands of years ago.
Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel is one of the largest in Iceland, reaching 30 metres wide and 10 metres high; it’s a spectacular sight. The lava tube ceiling has caved in near the entrance, which creates beautiful columns of light, revealing a fantastic range of colours along the tunnel walls.
Before you head into the tunnel, an expert guide will provide you with the necessary gear, a flashlight and a protective helmet and give a short safety briefing and introduction to the lava tunnel. Then, you get to head in! This is a tour for the senses. You will experience a new underground world, hear the echoes inside the cave and feel the sheer force of Icelandic nature. You will learn new things about Iceland’s unique geology and appreciate the structure's beauty. Film buffs will be delighted as you will see where scenes from the Hollywood movie Noah, with Anthony Hopkins, were filmed in this lava cave.
Golden Circle Direct
If you ask a local which tour you should take if you want a taste of Iceland near Reykjavík, they will most likely recommend the Golden Circle. After departing the Lava Tunnel, guests will visit the geothermal region of Geysir, a powerful reminder that Iceland is very much alive, with steam and water erupting meters into the air from the Strokkur geyser every few minutes. This is where the word geyser comes from! The tour continues to Gullfoss, Iceland’s most famous waterfall, where two tiers of water crash and tumble meters below. Be sure to walk down the ladder to see a different view of the waterfall!
The final stop is at Þingvellir National Park, known for its exceptional beauty, geological significance, and historical relevance. Þingvellier is where Icelandic democracy was born, as it’s the site of the island’s first parliament. Additionally, guests can visit where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet in Þingvellir, a unique Iceland experience.
