Snæfellsjökull National Park

West Iceland, IcelandEst. 2001170 km²

About

Iceland's only national park reaching from sea to summit. Centered on Snæfellsjökull glacier volcano — the starting point for Jules Verne's 'Journey to the Center of the Earth.'

Mystical. The glacier is said to be one of Earth's energy centers. On clear days it's visible from Reykjavík across the bay. The peninsula feels like Iceland in miniature.

Jules Verne chose this volcano as the entrance to Earth's core in his 1864 novel. Some believe it radiates spiritual energy. Whether or not you feel the vibes, the geology is undeniably dramatic.

Snæfellsnes peninsula is a full day trip from Reykjavík. The park includes lava fields, beaches, and the glacier. Kirkjufell is just outside the park but often combined. Climbing the glacier requires a guide.
