About

Drangajökull is the northernmost glacier of Iceland, occupying the southern foothills of the Hornstrandir peninsula in the Westfjords region. It covers approximately 150 km2 and is the only Icelandic ice cap situated entirely below 1,000 metres in elevation.

The blue of glacial ice is something photos can't capture. You have to see it in person.

It covers approximately 150 km2 and is the only Icelandic ice cap situated entirely below 1,000 metres in elevation. Lake sediment cores show that Drangajökull persisted near or above its present extent well into the mid-Holocene before retreating to near-modern limits between about 9,500 and 7,200 years ago. Modern airborne LiDAR mapping indicates the glacier has lost roughly 1.

Never walk on glaciers without a guide and proper equipment. Crevasses can be hidden by snow bridges.

questions

Can I walk on Drangajökull without a guide?
No. Crevasses on Drangajökull are often hidden under fresh snow and can be lethal — every glacier walk needs crampons, ropes and a certified guide. Book through a licensed tour operator, never freelance it.
How do I get to Drangajökull?
Drangajökull is located in Westfjords. Check live road conditions on this page before you drive — highland access often needs a 4×4 and some routes only open in summer.
When is the best time to visit Drangajökull?
Drangajökull is most accessible in summer, when access roads are clear of snow. Check live road conditions before you drive.
Is Drangajökull shrinking?
Most Icelandic glaciers have retreated measurably over the past few decades. Exact edges and access points shift year to year — treat any online map, including this one, as approximate.
