Where it can take you

2WD, built for paved roads and good gravel at low speed — Ring Road, Golden Circle, South Coast. F-roads are illegal in a 2WD and would void the insurance. Registered campsites only — wild camping in a vehicle is banned in Iceland since 2015.

Winter driving

Heating and the kitchen unit's water system both matter more in winter — confirm the current setup with Key Car before a cold-weather trip, since freezing pipes or an under-powered heater can turn a night unpleasant fast. Studded tyres are fitted seasonally (Nov 1–Apr 14) under Icelandic rental law. Highland routes close in winter regardless of vehicle, so plan a coastal or lowland loop.
