Dynjandi
Dynjandi
About
Dynjandi is a 100-meter waterfall on the Dynjandisá river in the Westfjords of Iceland.
The crown jewel of the Westfjords. A wedding-cake waterfall dropping 100 meters in stages, getting wider as it falls. Getting here is half the adventure — remote fjord roads with sheep and zero traffic.
The cascade spreads like a bridal veil. The sound builds as you hike up. By the time you're at the base of the main falls, the scale takes your breath away. There's a series of smaller falls below too. Pack a picnic.
Dynjandi means 'thundering one.' It's been inspiring visitors since people first settled the Westfjords. The fjord it sits in, Arnarfjörður, is one of the largest and most scenic in Iceland.
The drive is long but stunning. Make it an overnight trip — the Westfjords deserve more than a day trip. Camping area at the base. The smaller falls below are beautiful for swimming. Come prepared for weather — it changes fast here.

Made up of six successive waterfalls: Fjallfoss (the top, tallest tier, also the name for the whole falls), then Hundafoss, Strokkur, Gongumannafoss, Hrisvadsfoss, and Sjoarfoss
Total drop ~100 m
Tiered/stepped shape comes from stratified rock: hard lava layers form the steps while the river eroded the softer intermediate layers
Protected as a natural monument since 1981
