Ingólfshöfði Puffin Photo Tour is a 3 hours experience run by Öræfaferðir - From Coast To Mountains in Southeast Iceland, from 35.000 ISK per person. In all our trips to Ingólfshöfði we spend some time watching and photographing the birds. However, some people come with very advanced and heavy camera equipment and need more time to work with their gear.

In all our trips to Ingólfshöfði we spend some time watching and photographing the birds. However, some people come with very advanced and heavy camera equipment and need more time to work with their gear. Therefore we offer special departures for photographers at 6:15 on select mornings from around mid June until early August. In earlier part of the summer we might add some evening tours as well.
The maximum number of people on each trip is 10 persons plus guides on our open departures. We concentrate on photography on this trip, so we don´t spend time on history explanations and normal sightseeing like on our Ingólfshöfði Puffin Tour. Of course private groups can have bigger numbers if requested. We recommend that only people that are into photography partake in the tour.

The best time for puffin photography tours is after the puffins start to bring fish home to their burrows. Pufflings start to hatch from the egg in early-mid June, and the puffin activity increases more in July until early August when the parents have the chick big enough to leave for the sea and therefore do not need to bring fish home anymore. Normally it takes the parents about 6 weeks to bring enough fish for the puffling to be ready to fly out to sea.
What’s included
- A ride with the tractor pulled haycart to the cape, and guidance around the cape to the best photo locations.
- Our clients can park for free on Ingólfshöfði Parking.
What to bring
- Long lens for your camera. Be careful that we will go in all kind of weather so be equipped for rain and wind just in case.
Good to know
- Please note: in all our trips to Ingólfshöfði we are careful not to disturb the birds for too long time, and to make sure that the birds can continue to tend to their chicks or eggs, we never spend long time close to their nests. It is easy to forget the time when you are making beautiful photographs, so we ask for good cooperation of every member of the group. The rule we use is that all the photographers stay in view of our guide the whole time, and when we ask the group to move from one side of the cape to the other, every one comes with us. In earlier part of the summer there are about 150 pairs of great skuas and several pairs of great black-backed gulls nesting on the cape, and they need to keep their eggs warm (or their small chicks) so it is not good to stay to long in one place if there are nests near by.
