Ásbyrgi is a glacial canyon and forest in the north of Iceland, located approximately 38 kilometres (24 mi) east of Húsavík on the Diamond Circle road. The horseshoe-shaped depression is part of the Vatnajökull National Park and measures approximately 3.5 km in length and over 1 km wide. For more than half of its length, the canyon is divided through the middle by a distinctive rock formation 25 meters high called Eyjan, from which a vast landscape is seen. Unadalur is a valley on the east side of Skagafjörður, Iceland, a short distance up from Hofsós, north of Deildardalur. It is rather wide and there is considerable lowland and several farms. The river that runs through it is called Unadalsá near the top of the valley and Hofsá at the bottom. The valley is often a very snowy area in winter. At the bottom of Unadalur is Unadalsjökull, one of the numerous valley glaciers in Tröllaskagi. There is an old mountain road that runs through Unadalur to Svarfaðardalur. Kolbeinsdalur is a valley on the eastern side of Skagafjörður, Iceland. It reaches north and east of Hjaltadalur, which it runs parallel to until Hjaltadalur curves south near Hólar, while Kolbeinsdalur continues directly eastward. There is a long ridge, often simply called the Ásinn between the two valleys where they run parallel to one another. A hollow named Hálsgróf is to the east between the ridges and mountains and there is a drivable road over it. A little ways in, the valley curves again to the southeast. Svarfaðardalur is a large valley in central north Iceland. It is a part of the Dalvíkurbyggð municipality. The Svarfaðardalsá River flows along the valley, having its mouth near to the town of Dalvík. About 10 km from the sea the valley splits in two. The eastern one is called Skíðadalur and it keeps the main direction of the valley to the southwest, while the other one keeps the name Svarfaðardalur. Gönguskörð is a settlement and valley on the west side of Skagafjörður, Iceland, due northwest of Sauðárkrókur, in between Molduxi mountain to the south and Tindastóll Mountain to the north. Shortly after entering Gönguskörð, the area is split into three wings. The southernmost is Víðidalur in Staðarfjöll, the middle wing towards the south west is called Kálfárdalur, and the third and widest wing leads to the north along Tindastóll. Known for its towering hexagonal basalt formations and vivid turquoise river, the canyon gained international attention after the flow of the Jökulsá á Dal (Jökla) River was reduced due to the Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant project. Though the canyon was physically revealed between 2006 and 2009, it remained largely unknown until its popularization by Icelandic photographer and travel writer in 2016.
