  • Description of excursion.
  • The Cold Valley is the the name given to the old Highland Route connecting the west part of the country to the south part. More specifically connecting Thingvellir, the former site of the Icelandic parliament Althingi, to communities in the west. This route has been used for centuries by anyone wanting to make a shortcut between the two different parts of the country.
  • The Icelandic Parliament, Althingi “the meeting of all”, now presides in Reykjavík but for 900 years the People of Iceland would gather by the thousands every summer at Thingvellir. They came there to govern the affairs of the country, make law, pass judgement of the accused, arrange marriages and generally socialise. Perhaps a rare opportunity in a country spar-sly populated and with difficult terrain.
  • This makes Althingi the oldest parliament in the world and Icelandic society one of the worlds longest standing democracies.
  • Thingvellir is now a National Park and a World Heritage Site. Not only because of its historical significance but also because of its stunning natural beauty and unique geology. Located right on the rift between the continental tectonic plates of America and Eurasia it offers a powerful insight into the colossal forces that shape the planet and the view across Lake Thingvallavatn and its islands is unforgettable.
  • 40 minute drive from Reykjavik Thingvellir is our first stop.
  • But after a short hike through the heart of the site it’s time to head for the mountains.
  • We follow the route north and eventually we get onto The Cold Valley road. The route takes us to more than 700 meters above sea level and this time of year (early winter) it can be a challenge because of snow. But not to worry! Our vehicles are up to the job!
  • The Cold Valley road lies very close to Langjökull Glacier. Iceland’s second largest Glacier and you have good view of it as we drive. But we will do more. In vehicles such as ours it is possible to drive onto the glacier and if conditions allow that is what we will do. A short drive on the ice is quite an experience and might even be possible to get hold of some glacier ice you could take back to Reykjavik and cool your drink of choice when you come back from a long day on the road. But that will depend on the mood of Icelandic nature.
  • After the encounter with the glacier we head further and eventually reach Húsafell, the most inland community of the West. Here we will enjoy late lunch.
  • We continue our journey down from the mountains until we reach Hraunfossar falls. Here a bustling blue water river flows right from under an old lava flow creating one of Icelands natural wonders.
  • Further down the road we will also visit the hot spring Deildartunguhver. This is one of the biggest natural hot springs in the country where literally boiling water bubbles up to the surface in large quantities. The water is then harnessed to provide heating for thousands of people.
  • By now it is time to head back to the city and by early evening we get there. Hopefully though not before we have seen the Northern Lights which we will be constantly looking out for as the daylight vanes.
